I love what I do.
There have been ups and downs for sure.
I’ve been a consultant for almost my entire career,
And now it’s time to share it all.

After exactly 30 years in consulting,
working with some of the most intractable issues for clients,
I have decided to share what I built and delivered.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be putting the finishing touches on my playbook -
taking all the rich insights and experiences and sharing them with consultants who want to have an impact in the world.

If you’re interested, let me know.
And when we’re ready to go, we’ll send the details.

It’s time to do our very best work.
It’s time to love what we do.

Let’s go and spread The Ambition Playbook™ into the world.

I created this short video on the $20 billion man ~ deconstructing how one person can be worth over $20 billion.

💵💰 In the course of 24 hours, this one person increased the value of a company by $20 billion.
He didn't even do anything. He only said one word.

The word was "yes" and the person is Brian Niccol.
"Yes" is what he said when he was offered the position of CEO and Board Chair at Starbucks.

Starbucks is going through massive performance issues; their stock is down, customers are unhappy, customers are unhappy, employees (or partners as they are called at Starbucks) are unhappy, and shareholders are unhappy. They have two activist investors who have been agitating for change.

In one day and with one word, Brian Niccol increased the value of their holdings by around 25%. That's massive. It's unheard of actually. There are very very few people who have the influence to do anything like that - and this was the single largest increase in Starbucks' market cap in a single day.

★He's been called the LeBron James or the Tom Brady or the Messi of the restaurant industry.
That's high praise.
And it comes with massively high expectations.

I've gone deep and done the research and work to understand exactly what it is that the Starbucks board found so appealing in Niccol, and why the market responded so positively.

So what is the new CEO bringing to the party (or the coffee store?)

1. HIGHLY RELEVANT experience - dealing with quality and performance issues, complex supply chain operations, activist investors, and a board and stakeholders.

2. PROVEN TURNAROUND experience - resulting in an 800% increase in share price for Chipotle Mexican Grill and an increase in same store sales when competitors are all down.

3. BRAND understanding - he understands the power of brands and harnessing social media to amplify what he knows his consumers want. And what is Starbucks if not a brand?

4. DEEP MARKET and CONSUMER knowledge - he understands what his consumers want (reliable, quality, affordable) and he meets their needs with an offering to match, keeping prices lower whilst others ramped them up during inflationary pressure. He knows you can't grow by increasing prices.

5. Proven PEOPLE-LEADER - Walmart appointed Niccol to their board and called him a "dynamic leaders with a passion for excellence"; he has created a people-centric innovation culture.

Starbucks needs ALL of this.

In addition, there are some pretty big differences between the operations of Chipotle and Starbucks (covered towards the end of the video), but the market's message is "we believe in this guy; he's got what it takes to turn this thing around."

As further evidence of this, the Chipotle stock was notably down following his appointment, so taken together Niccol's appointment caused a net impact of close to $30 billion in market valuation changes across Starbucks and Chipotle.

I give 100% to my clients.
The sessions we run together lead to incredible impact and results!

The more I look at high-performing individuals and teams, the clearer the pattern becomes...

⚡️An ambition that is bigger than what they have done before, and what they "realistically think" they can do
⚡️An energy and a determination that is focused and driven
⚡️An aversion to distractions and a willingness to stop doing some things
⚡️Embracing that progress > planning and ambition > strategy.

✪ Dial up your ambition.
✪ Does it excite you? Does it excite your team?
✪ Can you see activities that are not adding value, and do you want to kill them off - now?
✪ Are you making progress vs making plans?

~~~
I want teams to achieve the massive impact they deserve.
✪So I wrote The Ambition Playbook™ to help leaders and teams accelerate their impact.
✪I'm also making it available now for consultants who want to leverage The Ambition Model with their clients.
Just wrapped up a fantastic conversation discussing transformation and change with the VP of Transformational Change at Nike
Behind the scenes it’s a game of getting the camera at eye level (never look down at the camera), an iPhone to pick up texts from the support team, and my iPad for building the visual model.
The conversation on how Nike is dealing with their current inflection point, by building on their bold ambition with incredible leadership alignment and then getting results by prioritizing strategic pillars was marvelous.
Getting ready to reinvigorate and relaunch Ambition after a little hiatus.
Some exciting news in the way.
Really exciting - especially if you’re a consultant in the organizational performance domain.
One year ago
I did something that changed everything.
I swam from Robben Island to Big Bay - with the beautiful Table Mountain watching over me as my guide and my custodian.
I'm not a swimmer.
I had never done a long swim.
I had never spent 3+ hours swimming from one place to the next.
I had never spent an extended amount of time in cold water. And certainly not in the ocean.
I mean, could someone (not in shape and not a swimmer) even think about doing this in my early 50's?
But in February last year I decided I would do it.
And within 24 hours I had committed myself.
⚡️Sent the email.
⚡️Paid the fee.
Because I travel a lot, finding pools to swim in wasn't always easy.
So I didn't really "train".
In fact this would be the first time I had gone this distance in the water.
I decided there were only two things that were going to stop me:
🥶 Hypothermia (can't do much about that - but I did try and prep by doing cold water immersion ... and in the process losing all sensation in my fingers for about three months ... borderline worrisome)
🦈 Sea creatures ... it's their home, not mine, so I just made sure to ask that they didn't pop around to that side of the bay whilst I was swimming (as if!)
The point of this is that you should not wait for things to be perfect.
Think it. Do it.
Our folly is in believing that tomorrow will be different.
But you might not get a tomorrow.
It will only happen if we make it happen.
I wasn't a swimmer.
I guess now I can say I am.
(and yes, I spared you the speedo photos ... no-one needs to see those!)
Thank you again to my incredible crew who helped to make it all happen:
🔥Wendy Case (the girls in the boat!)
🔥Carina Bruwer (incredible filmmaker - and I learned afterwards one of the BEST open water swimmers in the world > mortifying to only learn this afterwards, I know)
🔥Nadine Rose > for finding Carina, an for introducing me to my new Cape Town Office (aka The Mount Nelson Planet Bar)
🔥'Buff van Westenbrugge > Who provided me with much needed pre-swim and post-swim mindset coaching
🔥 Alistair Irving > I think this seed came up during a little gathering in London 🤔
🔥 Derrick Frazer + Michelle Petring who were just incredible in the boats and encouraged me along the way
🔥🔥And so many others.
💬 We had over 300 people in a wonderfully active WhatsApp group who were cheering me on from all over the world. I will never get rid of that group - I look back on the messages and they are so warm and inspiring and funny.
$$ We raised money for Swim Across America - Charlotte + ForAfrika + Make A Difference Leadership Foundation + Charlotte Ballet
But it was me who experienced the biggest transformation.
Say you're going to do it.
And then do it.
Because we only live once.
And we really don't want to have regrets.
