H.R. Harmer

H.R. Harmer Celebrating over 80 years of excellence, H.R. Harmer is a Fine Stamp Auction House located at Rockefeller Center in the heart of New York City. H.R.

Founded in London in 1918, the firm of H.R. Harmer very quickly became synonymous with high-quality philatelic auctions in our namesake's native Great Britain. By 1940 it was time for the company to branch out, and a satellite office was opened across the Atlantic in New York City. Harmer first rose to prominence in the United States when our firm was selected to sell the collection of the late Pr

esident Franklin Delano Roosevelt. These auctions were front-page news even in the non-philatelic press, as never before had the stamp collection of such a beloved public figure been made available to collectors. Over the coming decades, H.R. Harmer would go on to sell two of the most comprehensive and valuable collections ever to cross the auction block—those of Alfred H. Caspary and Alfred F. Lichtenstein, both of which would set new high-water marks in the industry. And, since 2019, H.R. Harmer has been selling the collection of German businessman Erivan Haub—a series of auctions which has once again placed H.R. Harmer at the forefront of the philatelic world. Today, led by a young and enthusiastic team, H.R. Harmer is still dedicated to providing collectors with the same professional service and philatelic expertise that our company was founded upon all those decades ago.

We had the most wonderful afternoon exploring The Postal Museum in London and riding the mail train that used to carry 4 million letters across the city every day. Our team is so excited to be in the UK to support the United States Philatelic Classics Society’s postal exchange with the Royal Philatelic Society, London. Make sure to check back with us tomorrow for content from the event!

This Mother’s Day, we’d like to highlight Lot 362 from our sale of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Collection in 1946.

It reads: “Presented to the Honorable Franklin D. Roosevelt By a Fellow Philatelist on Mother’s Day - May 13, 1934 as a Token of Esteem”

In 1934, a stamp commemorating Mother’s Day was released depicting “Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1” aka Whistler’s Mother.

Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at H.R. Harmer!

We had an incredible day yesterday at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, Connecticut. Our President, Charles Epting gave a lecture to the museum’s patrons on Postmaster John Hill and his famous fancy cancels he created in Waterbury. Our staff was then able to take a tour of the museums postal archives that featured mail with Postmaster Hill’s cancels, as well as a birthday letter to Postmaster Hill from his postal clerks. Thank you to we can’t wait to visit again!

Sometimes the back of a cover is just as interesting as the front. This cover has a rare city dispatch stamp that was used in Baltimore in the 1850’s, but what’s even more special is that an inscription on the back reveals that noted postal history George Sloane found it in President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s stamp collection while he was a performing a probate appraisal for his family. Make sure to flip your covers over or you might miss a piece of history!
