Managers Shouldn't Exist | OneHive Blog

I've long disliked the use of words like "manager" or "director" in the position title of people-leaders. What do you think, do you agree or disagree?

"The word 'manage' can be traced back to the 16th century where the verb was defined as 'to handle, train, or direct a horse.' Considering that the word literally referred to the training of an animal, it implies that management pertains to smaller, detailed concerns."

No company should have "Manager" in any people-leader position title.

Unitary Democracies at Work | OneHive Blog Article

A couple of months back, I read about the difference between "Unitary" and "Adversary" democracies and haven't been able to get it out of my head. So I wrote a blog post about it.

"In human groups, it's common for groups to end a democratic process with its members strongly divided. At this point, some rule must be invoked to translate split opinions into a single choice. This kind of group decision-making arises from individuals that have conflicting goals and different preferences is known as an 'Adversary Democracy.'

In contrast, honeybee colonies make group decisions based on its individuals having aligned goals (choose the best homesite) and shared preferences (home size, location, etc.). This is known as a 'Unitary Democracy.'"

When you think of the ideal employee, how would you describe them? You'll probably think of words like , , , , , , , , , etc.

Now answer me this: When was the last time you met a truly fulfilled individual that was lazy, disengaged, reactive, individualistic and apathetic? I would bet that has never happened. Fulfilled people are inherently passionate people and epitomize the ideal employee. Fulfilled people are exactly the type of people you want everywhere in your organization, and they embody every characteristic that would be responsible for the outcomes you want.

The mutual benefit is obvious. It's the ultimate symbiotic relationship. When the group takes care of the individual, the individual takes care of the group.

In the spirit of Valentine's Day, I'd like to share this Kurzgesagt video on Egoistic Altruism. Basically showing how the dynamics of resource availability since the industrial revolution has changed how we should behave to maximize selfish benefits.

Long story, short: Treating people better, whether you know them or not, makes our world a better place.

"Goals allow us to create moments in time that don't yet exist. They are responsible for the vector our lives are lived on, and they satiate the inherent human desire to have purpose and grow. We want to become better, we want more opportunities, more freedom, and to be proud of what we've accomplished."

5 Reasons Every Business Needs a Vision

"If you want to succeed long-term, you need to plan long-term. It works exactly the same for personal successes. It is important to understand that every decision, every action, and every strategy is building towards the same end-game. The clearer, more succinctly, and further out you are able to articulate that, the greater your chances of success."

A Vision is future oriented and aspirational. It’s ideal and something simple enough you can actually picture (envision) in your mind.
