Michelangelo Hated Painting the Sistine Chapel and Wrote a Poem About It

There are plenty of stories about how painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel was quite literally a pain for Michelangelo—the artist had to be in an incredibly awkward position to complete the work of art. He supposedly hated the task so much that he wrote a poem about it.

The sonnet, which was originally written in his native Italian in 1509, has been translated by American poet Gail Mazur. Here's a sample: "My stomach's squashed under my chin, my beard's pointing at heaven, my brain's crushed in a casket, my breast twists like a harpy's."

At Any Given Moment, There Are Approximately 2,000 Thunderstorms Happening on Earth

Some areas of the planet experience extreme weather more often than others. But at any given time there are an estimated 2,000 thunderstorms happening in different locations on Earth, according to the National Severe Storms Laboratory.

Annually, there are about 16 million thunderstorms across the globe and around 100,000 of them occur somewhere in the United States.

Space travel makes mice run in loops.

Scientists are aware of the fact that space travel takes a toll on the human body. But it turns out that it also does something strange to mice. When 20 rodents were sent up to the International Space Station, they started to suddenly run in loops around their cage after just a week, according to a 2019 study published in Scientific Reports. Once one mouse started to run, the others quickly joined in. While researchers don't know exactly why the mice were acting like race cars circling a track at top speed, they think the little critters might simply have been enjoying the "rewarding effects of physical exercise."

There's an optical illusion at bottom of the sea.

There are so many wonders waiting to be discovered deep within the ocean and scientists came across one of them in March 2019. While exploring an underwater volcano with a remotely operated vehicle some 6,500 feet under the sea, they spotted what appeared to be a small lake-like pool that was upside-down (and, obviously, underwater). And if that doesn't seem like it makes sense, that's because it doesn't.

Along with a video of the underwater illusion, the Schmidt Ocean Institute expedition explains, "The liquid in these upside down pools is hydrothermal vent fluid. Up to 320 degrees in temperature, it is a 'soup' of harsh chemicals—including sulfur and metals—that allows life to thrive in a deep dark ocean."

Mandy Joye, a professor at the University of Georgia and the lead scientist of the expedition, told Smithsonian magazine that "the immense beauty and majesty of the scene was overwhelming. It is something I will never forget."

Narwhal tusks are really an "inside out" tooth.

Narwhals are unlike most other whales because they have what appears to be a giant tusk. But that's not actually a tusk at all—what you're seeing is a tooth. Harvard University's Martin Nweeia told the BBC that the "tooth is almost like a piece of skin in the sense that it has all these sensory nerve endings," adding that it's "essentially built inside out."

The "Happy Birthday" Song Brings A Bunch of Royalties

In 1893, the Hill sisters needed a song for their kindergarten class to sing on birthdays. Today, "Happy Birthday" is the most profitable song of all time. The song's ownership had changed hands a few times over the past 100 years. But music holding company Warner Chappell bought the rights for $15 million in 1990, and have held them since. Today the song brings in $2 million a year in royalties, which comes to $5,000 per day. Another fun fact: the song costs $25,000 to use it in a movie or TV show.
