Everybody’s doing the same thing… except one person

LeBron in the air
Game on the line
Every phone in the arena pointed at the court

And the Nike founder is just sitting there. No phone. No recording. No proof.

The wealthiest people I know aren’t smarter.
They’re not luckier.
They’re not grinding harder.

They’re just less distracted.

And it shows up in two places: how fast they build things, and how long those things last.

𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲

GoldenEye 007 was built in under two years by nine people. Most of them had never made a game before.

No Slack chaos.
No endless meetings.
No performative updates.

They showed up, solved one problem at a time, and shipped one of the best-selling games in history.

That’s what focus looks like at maximum velocity.

The myth is that distraction slows you down a little.
The reality is it breaks momentum entirely.

They kicked me out of the group chat at $10M…

Not fired. Not demoted. Just... excluded.

One day I’m grabbing beers with the team after crushing the month. Six months later, I’m finding out about team drinks through Instagram stories.

The transition happened slowly, then all at once.

Year 3 at AppSumo: We’re 8 people. Every decision happens over lunch. I know their dogs’ names, their dating drama, their Netflix passwords.

Year 4: 35 people. I’m still “one of the guys.” We play poker on Fridays. I’m terrible at it. Nobody cares because I’m buying the beer.

Year 5: 80+ people. I walk into the kitchen and conversations stop. Not because they hate me. Because I just had to let their friend go for missing targets.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth nobody tells you about scaling:

You can’t be their friend and their CEO.

Not because you’re an as***le. Because accountability and friendship are incompatible at scale.

The moment you need to choose between what’s best for the business and what’s best for your friend, you’ve already lost.

I tried to have it both ways. Killed morale trying.

Monday: Grab beers with the sales team
Tuesday: Put two of them on PIPs
Wednesday: Wonder why nobody trusts me

Your spouse tries to help. But when you tell them you might need to lay off 20% of the team, they get that look. The one that says “maybe don’t tell me everything.”

So you stop talking. To everyone.

That’s when the real isolation hits.

You’re holding together a company that everyone thinks is thriving, while feeling like you’re drowning in decisions nobody else can make.

Culture is confusing

Because by all accounts this designer was world class. But at our company where we ship things fast and learn later? Her perfectionism was a bad fit.

She was constantly stressed by our fast deadlines because she didn’t want to ship work that didn’t meet her standards. Our philosophy was progress over perfection.

These two philosophies clashed. Neither are wrong - just different.

Unless you have clearly defined operating principles (and share them regularly) you’re going to have these misfires in your hiring process.
