Pre-med hour targets add up to 1,440+ across clinical, research, volunteering, leadership, and shadowing. Most applicants see that number and start counting.

Admissions committees don’t read it that way. They look for depth: one or two activities you stuck with for years, not a stack of short commitments added the summer before you apply.

Some applicants are competitive with just 180 clinical hours by senior year. The difference is that their experiences connect to a clear reason for pursuing medicine.

What matters:

Start early, without forcing everything into freshman year.
Choose activities that fit your application theme.
Stay with them through the application.
Don’t let everything begin senior year.

Former med school admissions officers say skipping update letters is a mistake. A strong one can move a waitlisted file back to the top of the pile.

Your application shows who you were when you submitted. The cycle runs for months. An update letter gives the committee new evidence to reconsider you, such as a publication, an award, a leadership role, or a big MCAT jump. It is not a check-in.

Send it in October or November before interview decisions, January through March after interviews, or right away if you’re waitlisted. Check each school’s policy first, because some only accept portal uploads.

Finishing your MCAT schedule and being ready to test are not the same thing.

Our 520+ scorers look at evidence, not the calendar. Your last 2–3 full-lengths should land at or above your target. One great score doesn’t count, and neither does your average, which an early diagnostic can drag down.

Two more things they’d change about how most students prep:

Weight your hours toward your weakest section. Taking it from the 50th to the 70th percentile moves your score far more than taking a strong one from the 90th to the 93rd.

Study actively. In research cited by UPenn, students who practiced retrieval kept 80% of what they learned after one week. Students who reread kept 36%.
