In honor or I wanted to share my thoughts on choosing a doula.
During my first pregnancy I made the mistake of thinking my husband and I could handle it on our own, for my second I came to the decision we did not have to!
1. Cultural Understanding
Unfortunatley, the experience of women of color and white women tend to be different in the medical arena for many. With that being said choosing a doula who is aware of these circumstances and your own cultural background can be beneficial when you are in deep labor and need someone to advocate on your behalf.
2. Well Read
It is important that your Doula has a great deal of knowledge in the field of birth and what to do in the case of an emergency. A doula is there to provide her expertise and knowledge along with her emotional and physical support.
3. Resourceful
Choosing a Doula who is resourceful with many tricks in her bag is IMPORTANT. Obviously every women is different and so is every birth story, choosing someone who has many tools for a variety of scenarios is imperative.
4. Supportive
Unfortunately, many women are forced into medical decisions based on fear and lack of knowledge, having a doula who is on your page and there to support your decisions is both important and refreshing.
5. Lastly, someone that clicks!
My first labor took 20 hours my second 62 days (not active) this individual will be with you during the duration of your pregnancy and labor which could take 3-24 hours and beyond. Go out to eat, have a green juice, stroll in the park, find ways to see if you click before making such a commitment!
Did you have a doula, and if so what was your #1 non-negotiable?
