Understanding Matrescence as the missing piece of postpartum care.

The word “Matrescence” was coined by the anthropologist Dana Raphael, the same anthropologist who coined the word “Doula,” as the process of becoming a mother, a developmental passage in which a woman transitions from pre-conception, pregnancy, and birth, surrogacy, or adoption to the postnatal period and beyond.
The exact length of matrescence is individual and recurs with each child.
The scope of the changes encompasses multiple parts of a parent’s life. Biological, emotional, social, and spiritual, and can be likened to the developmental push of adolescence.

ACOG statement about working with a doulas.

Health care in the United States is increasingly team-based, and doulas—who often provide emotional, physical, and educational support for patients during birth, the postpartum period, and beyond—are valuable members of many care teams.

ACOG’s new clinical guidance encourages ob-gyn collaboration with doulas and gives ob-gyns the tools they need to better understand a doula’s role. It also highlights the importance of stronger partnerships between clinicians and doulas, which can provide vital support across the lifespan—including during and after pregnancy—and can lead to better patient outcomes.
