"This past weekend, I spent a couple of hours talking to my Aunt Lillian, 84, a social worker in the Philadelphia public school system for 40+ years, about my father who was a carpenter and a DJ and paratrooper who did 2 tours in Vietnam.
My father died when I was 8. He was a black life that mattered. My memories of him are tethered to polaroids, blurry and textured.
Aunt Lillian said Vietnam turned him into a man and stole a bit of his humanity - like many black men who came home seeking penance and peace, but found chaos and potent elixirs. She also told me about my paternal grandfather, whose name I did not know until last weekend. He converted to Judaism and died when she was 8. The universe has a sense of symmetry."
