Forbidden Powers — Episode 6: Forbidden Desires (Part 2)

Kamre mein purane paise ki boo thi. Gehri lakri. Meiz ke ooper ek madham lamp jalta hua.

Grey suit wale aadmi ne do ungliyon se ek kaali file aage sarkai.

“Kholo,” us ne kaha.

Ali ne file ko haath nahi lagaya. Woh aadmi ko parh raha tha. Chehra pursukoon. Awaaz pursukoon. Lekin us ke neeche kuch tez aur bhooka harkat kar raha tha, jaise barf ke neeche behta paani.

“Tumhein pehle se pata hai andar kya hai,” Ali ne kaha.

Aadmi muskuraya. “To tum batao.”

“Ek number,” Ali ne kaha. “Itna bara ke main sawal karna chhor doon.”

Muskurahat rahi. Us ke peeche ki energy thandi aur sapaat ho gayi.

Ali ne file kholi. Woh theek tha. Number wahin tha.

“Farq yahi hai.”

Aur yahi jaal tha. Ali ne use samajhne se pehle seene mein mehsoos kar liya. Khauf nahi. Khwahish. Us ki kheench. Us ke andar ka woh larka jo aaj bhi train mein bhooka baitha ameer aadmiyon ko khate dekh raha tha.

Woh us ke saath baitha raha. Us ne use dhakela nahi. Train wale buzurg ne ek baar kaha tha: jis khwahish se tum bhaago ge, woh umar bhar tumhare peeche bhaage gi. Jis khwahish ko seedha dekh lo, woh baith jaati hai aur khamosh ho jaati hai.

Ali ne use dekha. Saans li. Use baithne diya.

Phir file band kar di.

“Nahi,” us ne kaha.

Aadmi ka haath glass tak jaate jaate ruk gaya. Ek lamhe ke liye naqab sarka, aur Ali ne andar asli cheez dekhi — koi businessman nahi. Kuch aur, bohot purana. Jis ne yeh khel bohot mardon ke saath khela tha, aur kabhi yeh lafz nahi suna tha.

“Tum apna irada badal lo ge,” aadmi ne narmi se kaha. “Sab badal lete hain.”

Ali utha aur bahar nikal gaya.

Rahdari mein lift ke paas ek aurat khari thi, grey libaas mein. Us ne Ali ko dekha tak nahi. Us ke kuch kehne se pehle hi button daba diya.

Ali ne use parhne ki koshish ki.

Kuch wapas nahi aaya. Na jhoot, na sach. Bas thehra hua paani.

Lift ke darwaze khule. Woh andar gayi aur darwaza rok kar khari ho gayi.

Lift ke farsh par, us ki aeri ke paas, ek safaid lifafa para tha. Us par ek lafz chhapa hua tha.

The room smelled like old money. Dark wood. One lamp burning low over the table.

The man in the grey suit slid a black folder across with two fingers.

“Open it,” he said.

Ali did not touch it. He was reading the man instead. The face was calm. The voice was calm. But under it, something moved fast and hungry, like water under ice.

“You already know what is inside,” Ali said.

The man smiled. “Then tell me.”

“A number,” Ali said. “Big enough that I stop asking questions.”

The smile stayed. The energy behind it dropped, cold and flat.

Ali opened the folder. He was right. The number was there. Under it, a photo of a small iron box, old, sealed, no lock, no key.

Har darwaza paise se khulta nahi hota,
kuch tale sirf niyat se toote hain.

“You want me to bring this to you,” Ali said.

“I want you to want it,” the man said. “That is the difference.”

And that was the trap. Ali felt it land in his chest before his mind caught up. Not fear. Want. The pull of it. The part of him that was still a boy on a train, hungry, watching rich men eat.

He sat with it. He did not push it away. The old man on the train had told him once: a desire you run from will chase you for life. A desire you look at, straight, sits down and goes quiet.

Ali looked at it. He breathed. He let it sit.

Then he closed the folder.

“No,” he said.

The man’s hand stopped halfway to his glass. For one second the mask slipped, and Ali saw the real thing underneath — not a businessman. Something older. Something that had done this to many men before, and never heard that word.

“You will change your mind,” the man said softly. “They always do.”

Ali stood up and walked out.

In the hallway, a woman in grey was waiting by the lift. She did not look at him. She pressed the button for him before he could.

He tried to read her.

Nothing came back. Not a lie, not a truth. Just still water.

The lift doors opened. She stepped in and held them.

On the floor of the lift, near her heel, lay a white envelope with one word printed on it.
