This Wittnauer 242T is a beautiful relic of the Space Race. The tritium lume has aged over 60 years to reach its glorious pumpkin-level perfection (no fauxtina short-cuts here). The matte black-almost-gray dial serves as an effective backdrop to three engine-turned subdials, circumscribed by contrasting glossy rings. Instead of a standard seconds track, we have a rarely seen decimal track which breaks up a minute into hundredths — a particularly geeky detail that has its uses in scientific applications. On the far more ubiquitous latter 242T’s, an inner minutes track is added to the dial, presumably to make time-setting a little easier, if at the cost of a more visually complex readout. There is no bezel, so most of the 38mm footprint is taken up by dial, lending to its great wrist presence. Sharp bevels are obliquely cut into each lug, providing an otherwise simple case with some sculpted dimensionality. Finally, this 242T features the so-called “Solo-dial”, a early variant which omits the “Geneve” subscript under “Wittnauer” as well as the aforementioned inner minute track. It is rarer than hens teeth.
