Behind the scenes of neon.

We recently partnered with to see the craft in action. Artist Kate Hush () led a live demonstration of glass bending and bombarding, offering a closer look at the technical skill required to transform raw glass tubes into neon lighting.

Following the demo, James Akers () and Kate Hush joined moderator Hamilton Guillén to discuss neon’s role across contemporary art and architecture.

Thank you to our speakers, UrbanGlass for partnering with us, and everyone who joined us for this great session.

✨ Looking Ahead: The Next Chapter of the SLC ✨

As we close the 25th edition of the Student Lighting Competition, we’re reminded that the SLC is more than a competition—it’s a continuous thread connecting students, educators, and professionals across the lighting community.

For Craig Young, Co-Chair of the SLC alongside Shaun Fillion, that connection began as a student at NYSID, where he received an Honorable Mention in 2019—an experience that later brought him back to the program as a committee member and now Co-Chair.

💬 “I first experienced the SLC as a student, and it showed me how much potential there is in this industry to support and elevate emerging professionals.”

Today, Craig helps guide the SLC as it continues to evolve—building on its foundation while looking ahead.

The next chapter is about expansion and deeper connection: reaching more schools, strengthening engagement between students and professionals, creating more opportunities for mentorship, collaboration, and career pathways across the lighting community, while also collaborating with other committees to build year-round engagement with students.

As we reflect on this milestone year, one thing remains the same: the SLC is a platform for student expression and a bridge into the profession—shaped by those who once stood on the student side, and sustained by those who continue to believe in its impact.

💡 Thank you for being part of the 25th edition of the SLC. We look forward to what comes next.

✨ Student Lighting Competition 2023 ✨
Theme: Circle of Light

2023 marked a long-awaited milestone: the full return of the IESNYC Student Lighting Competition to an in-person exhibition at LEDucation.

With more than 100 students and a full hall of projects on display, the energy in the space reflected the excitement of being back together in person. Hosting the competition at LEDucation brought students and industry professionals into the same room — creating space for conversation, feedback, and connection.
The impact was tangible: three job offers were extended during the exhibition.

The theme, Circle of Light, challenged students to construct a three-dimensional study exploring how light plays a role in life’s cycles — from circadian rhythms and lunar phases to sustainability and product life cycles. The resulting projects demonstrated thoughtful exploration of light as both a scientific and conceptual force.

🏆 2023 Winners
Grand Prize — ‚Beyond the Veil‘ · Anirudh Anand, Priyanka Shah & Aarohi Mittal
Second Place — ‚Dimple‘ · Qianhui Lino
Third Place — ‚Infinite Reality Box‘ · Fia Huston

💡 As we approach the 25th edition of the competition next week, 2023 stands out as the year the exhibition floor filled up again — reconnecting students, educators, and professionals through light.
