"By having an LGBTQ space, (I was) able to let my guard down as a q***r person in this space. Lizza and Tanya's ability to hold space for each of us to show up authentically where we are in this journey, while also being integrity partners to understand how we fit into systems of oppression (even within the LGBTQ community), I learned so much."

In another co-hosted episode of the Culture Stew Podcast, Maria and Roger have an emotional and heartfelt conversation on who we all are and what makes us that way. They talk about how to learn about why we are the way that we are, and transform that into sustaining ourselves.
How do you learn more, build community and find purpose within ourselves?
How do you find peace? What makes your energy shift?
These questions, and more, encompass the conversation around what you need to do what you want to do.

This is a photo of the roots of a plant that is root bound held in by a pot that's too small. The roots (and therefore the plant) has run out of space and outgrown the pot.

We think internalized racism is the expression of self hate. The loving of lighter skin. The straightening of hair. The use of"Good English". It actually is something more than that.

Those are just the manifestations of the ways in which we have internalized racism. To transform our experience in the world and the world itself, we have to go after the root. In an experience of unexplored internalized racism - we are like the roots this plant. Tangled. Unclear.

The roots in the ways that we've learned racism. The ways that we've ingested it's poison and it is starting to impact our own belief in our wholeness.

We were born whole.
We can live our wholeness. And we can challenge and defeat racism while we do it. But we first have got to put down the ways that we have internalized it.

You say you want to live a liberated life. But do you even know what liberation is?

What does liberation look like in your life?
In mine it looks like independent thought, non-reactive response, deciding in every moment what I want to do rather than reacting to the whims of our society.
It's understanding that racism, sexism, homophobia and heterosexism don't run my life. They never have and they never will.

Can you remember who you were before the world told you who you should be? That was one of the main questions that I ask myself as I began my journey of unlearning the racism that I had ingested.

Being socialized in a racist society doesn't only impact those who have been privileged by racism it also impacts those who have been marginalized by it. It is possible to challenge racism by healing the ways that we have internalized it.

This course will be a course designed for people who identify as part of BIPOC communities and any and all of the groups belonging to communities marginalized by racism.

It is my hope and dream that we live free of internalized racism so that we can transform our world through our own liberation.

I’ll tell you what. I want to experience and be in a world where everyone knows their worth.

What’s worth? It’s value. It’s importance. It’s agency. It’s the shine that I never question - even in the face of racism.

I didn’t always know my worth. And that was because I had internalized some of the racism that was directed at me daily. And so in the face of that onslaught of racism, I thought that the short comings of a racist society were about me.

It wasn’t.

The internal freedom that I feel through processes of unlearning internalized racism is untold. And the external freedom is unmatched. Race is not a burden to me anymore. Racism does not oppress me psychologically, so I can challenge it more clearly externally. I experience my agency every day.

Its time to share what I’ve learned.
