Painted as clay, thick and sculptural in its impasto, this portrait of Paola and my friend Jenny takes shape through a heavy-handed, instinctive approach. Each stroke is driven by my Neanderthal brain, choosing movement in paint over strict technique and letting the hand wander clumsily and freely across the surface. The result is a raw, tactile homage, their presence rendered in color and texture, alive with the energy of the moment and the intimacy of friends deeply known.

This is a portrait of my good friend Ellis Gallagher. I love that he left a black tag on the white canvas for me to play with, and from that playful beginning, our collaboration took shape. His marks become a self-portrait, while my painting of him becomes a portrait, together forming a single, intimate reflection of Ellis, capturing the many facets of who he is.

Ellis and I met in Brooklyn many years ago, and over time I have come to know him as a remarkable artist whose work moves effortlessly between the street and the museum. He traces shadows in chalk on walls and sidewalks, leaving fleeting impressions that capture the dance of light and time. Each outline mirrors a shadow in daylight, a ghost of the past and a hint of the future, returning each night to its cast shadow as the sun sets, closing the circle between day and night.

AFTER THE PARTY IS OVER (2024)
Oil on recycled canvas, painted from one of my original clay street sculptures.

When I first created this as a sculpture, it was a warning about climate change, the skull under a party hat, the hangover after decades of denial. But lately it feels like something else too, a quiet premonition about AI, excess, and what happens when we mistake progress for permanence.
