Welcome new followers!
Hi everyone! I’m Britny Bensman, BA, BSN, RN, the founder of DeafMed. I’m originally from Tennessee and now proudly living in Ohio with my amazing husband and two beautiful children. I’m a deaf nurse specializing in internal medicine and currently a Nurse Practitioner student.
My healthcare journey began while I was earning my biology degree at Gallaudet University. During that time, I worked as a phlebotomy technician, which became my first introduction to hands-on patient care. After graduating, I moved to Ohio and became a medical assistant, then later earned my LPN and eventually my RN and BSN in 2024.
Throughout my career, I’ve gained experience across a wide range of specialties, including:
Emergency Room
Urgent Care
Primary Care
OBGYN
Family Medicine
Sports Medicine
And now, Internal Medicine, where I’ve truly found my place building long-term relationships with patients and my care team.
Being a deaf nurse comes with challenges, but it has also become one of my greatest strengths. I use tools like VRS for calls, secure chat in EPIC, interpreters for meetings, and an amplified stethoscope to make communication safe, clear, and effective. These tools help me provide excellent care and also show others why accessibility matters.
Why I Started DeafMed
I created DeafMed because I wanted to change what’s possible for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community in healthcare. Growing up deaf, communication often felt like a barrier. Today, I’m determined to make sure others don’t feel that same limitation. Deaf professionals belong in healthcare…. not just as patients, but as skilled, valued providers.
DeafMed is built on three core values:
Empowerment – Encouraging the Deaf community to break barriers in healthcare.
Accessibility – Ensuring communication access for all.
Advocacy – Elevating Deaf voices, talent, and leadership at every level of healthcare.
My goal is to expand DeafMed into a larger platform for mentorship, programs, camps, and hands-on opportunities that support future Deaf healthcare providers.
I’m deeply grateful for my family, friends, professors, and every nurse who encouraged me along the way. Their support helped me turn “can’t” into “can.”
When passion meets purpose, great things happen.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
With love,
Nurse Britny
