Stanford researchers are using catfish to turn the tide on “snail fever” 🐌 🐟

Schistosomiasis, or “snail fever”, quietly impacts rural communities across sub-Saharan Africa, southern Asia, and the Americas, mostly affecting people who live and work near unclean water. The culprit: a parasite carried by freshwater snails.

Treatments exist. But breaking the cycle at its source is harder.

A new project in Senegal is testing whether adding native fish like African catfish to rice paddies can naturally reduce the snails that spread the parasite — helping stop the disease before it starts.
