Following the water crisis involving high levels of lead in drinking water that occurred in 2014 in Flint, Michigan, concerns have been raised about the safety of drinking water in other areas of the country, specifically in homes with children, schools, and hospitals. Lead poisoning is a serious and sometimes fatal condition. It occurs when lead builds up in the body. Lead is a highly toxic metal and a very strong poison. Children under the age of 6 are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can severely affect mental and physical development. Environ Safety is proud to offer water quality testing for the presence of lead in drinking water for our commercial clientele. We have partnered with our laboratory, EMSL, to provide our clients with this cutting edge testing that only a few regional firms are able to provide. Due to our licensing and existing laboratory relationship, we have been given first priority to offer this service to our clients while other consulting firms are being turned away. In our featured project of the week, we wanted to highlight some new regulatory changes that have occurred in the testing of fireproofing material for asbestos. Fireproofing material is classified as "surfacing" material and required samples to be collected based on the square footage of the material. Fireproofing material was typically analyzed by the laboratory using the PLM ("Polarized Light Microscopy") method which would determine the presence or lack of asbestos. However, New York State released a requirement that all fireproofing material be tested via the ELAP Method 198.8 to test for the possibility of vermiculite which is not easily detected while using the PLM method. Though this method is considered to be more thorough, the high cost of the required testing is proving to be a burden to our clients. We are advising our clients to budget accordingly when considering taking on a project involving fireproofing.

Finally feels like fall is starting to set in here in NYC. Environ Safety has worked on many interesting residential projects over the summer, but the majority of our projects are still commercial office spaces that are transformed from tenant to tenant. Chances are the office space you work in used to look like this!
