Most people think a tax deduction is a direct reduction of tax. Of course this is not true. A deduction , if it exceeds a variety of limitations, only serves to reduce your tax by your effective tax rate. So if you are in the 25% tax bracket a $100 deduction translates into a $25 tax savings!
