Watching the recent news about Anifa Mvuemba pausing production at Hanifa brought something to mind that every emerging designer should consider.
Behind every successful independent fashion brand is a founder carrying the weight of the responsibility of keeping everything moving, and the reality of the unspoken sacrifices.
For many, the designer dream begins with a desire for freedom... specifically, the freedom to create and control your destiny while building something meaningful.
But if we’re not careful, the business we build can slowly become the very thing that takes that freedom (and fulfillment) away.
This is why I often remind designpreneurs that launching a brand isn’t just about having a beautiful collection. It’s also about the designing the life your brand will require from you daily.
Some challenges are unwelcome, like the hurdles Anifa is now facing. Though she has taken a beat to reassess and reset, I believe she was built for this.. and will return battle-tested and better.
She, like you, wants a business that allows her to think clearly, create intentionally, and actually enjoy the life she is building.
As you analyze how things unfolded (or didn't unfold) for Hanifa, allow this to be a teachable moment.
A level of risk and uncertainty is always going to be a part of your entrepreneurial journey. But thoughtful growth… wise infrastructure… and intentional decisions can protect the life you’re trying to build along the way.
In the end, you’re not just designing clothes, accessories, jewelry, etc... you’re designing a life you wanna to love.
And I’ll always be here rooting for designpreneurs who are determined to do both of those things well.
Today, ask yourself this question, "When my brand becomes wildly successful, what kind of life do I want that success to support?"
**Save this and come back to it as you build.**
