Urban Cider Project - Nyc

Urban Cider Project - Nyc The first crowd-sourced urban cider made entirely from foraged fruit growing in NYC. Part of a growing trend of cidermakers foraging in urban areas.

Alex Wilson, from Wayside Cider in the Catskills and Dan Pucci, Cider Director at Wassail, couldn't help notice apple, crab apple, quince, hawthorn and pear trees growing wild all over the city. They started posting their finds on Instagram and soon others were giving them tips about trees. If you know about a tree bearing fruit in your backyard or in a park or by the side the road, join this gro

up! Each tree has a unique story to tell. Some were planted intentionally. Others are growing in improbable places because someone threw an apple core out the window and the seeds just happened to land in the right place. Squirrels and birds can also disperse seeds. There are quince growing in Riverside park. Wild Seckel pears in Red Hook. Purple crab apples in Central Park. (more examples here.) The city is teeming with potential fermentable fruits! Part of a growing trend of cidermakers foraging and helping to revive forgotten varieties, Alex and Dan will press what they have harvested this year and make their first barrel of NYCider to be released this spring at Wassail. This will be an annual event. Help them create a map of all the fruiting trees in all five boroughs and take part in the harvest next fall. You'll learn about horticulture, history, foraging, pressing and fermentation and take part in the release each spring. Be an urban cidermaker!
