Happy 14th Birthday to my one and only son, Pharaoh. . .

While at the hospital another mom, my friend was also here with her son. Thankfully they're at home now πŸ™ŒπŸΎ. We had the chance to meet up and be a listening ear for each other. Before Ashley left she gave me this very thoughtful gift πŸ’• Thank you!

As I share this final episode (link in profile) of my podcast I’m actually in the hospital with my son going on day #5. Not sharing for anyone to feel sorry for us but take whatever serves you from our story.

Although he has Sickle Cell(September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month) He has other chronic illnesses, that falls under Neurology, Nephrology, and Cardiology and any one of these illnesses can bring him to the hospital. Sometimes they can figure out what’s going sooner than later and other times they can’t right away, so we go through trial and error. Nevertheless, it’s an unpredictable life we live and there are many times I feel alone in this space, even though I know we are loved and supported by our family and friends, there are certain parts of the walk you do alone even if you don’t want to. We do our best to enjoy days out of the hospital and work through the moments when we are here.

I felt good talking to my guest on this episode, it’s never the exact journey but along the way, I know I’ll see her across the road from me because of the similarities in our story. Much love for sharing your journey with us and to for making all of this possible πŸ’•πŸ’«

We talked about what Survival Mode looked like for Darcel as a single mother unschooling with her kids. We get into what she did to maintain a sense of self, the reality of feeling hopeless and at the same time how having a glimpse of hope helped her emerged out of survival mode and set her plans to Bloom aka Thrive in 2018.

[Our Sickle Cell Story] My son has Hemoglobin SS. I never knew I carried the SC trait until I was pregnant with Pharaoh and I definitely didn't know his father did either. When both parents have the trait there is a 25% your child will get the full-blown disease. I worried about it a lot when I was pregnant. You don't know if your child has the disease until they are a year old because up until that time they are still carrying the mothers hemoglobin and the test results are not accurate. I found out Pharaoh's diagnosis in the worst way(The Dr. had terrible bedside manners) A short time after he turned 1yrs he was very lethargic his body very limp and I rushed him to the ER( he was actually in the ER the day before) so they had his blood results in the system. When the doctor came into the room she said verbatim "his blood levels drop drastically compared to the other day, but that's what happens when you have SC" I was like he has what? And after that life changed again for us in so many ways because this was the 3rd chronic illness he was diagnosed with by the age of 1. Motherhood took on new meaning as I took on a caregiver's role. We are wiser and more resilient because of it all.

From that experience, I realized how important it is to know your partner's medical history beyond STD's. But I often wonder how many couples talk about genetics or go to genetic counseling? And if they do and they find out that if they decide to have kids that the child would be at risk of inheriting a genetic disease, do they take that risk or what? That's a hard conversation.

What type of disease were you or a loved one diagnosed with? How do you describe your severity?

The most common types of sickle cell disease (SCD) are sickle cell anemia (hgb SS), sickle c disease (hgb SC) and sickle beta (hgb SΞ²+/0). There are other types of abnormal hemoglobin genes that can be paired with the sickle gene to result in SCD.

Tried a new, cool spot that's [ black owned ] called with my friend yesterday and the drinks were really really good. The owner is Jamaican πŸ‡―πŸ‡² and one of his staff is Haitian πŸ‡πŸ‡Ή

I tried an elixer (I can't remember the nameπŸ™ˆ) but it was a mix of ginger beer with coffee and I had a latte. Love the handkerchief around the class πŸ‘ŠπŸΎ

My friend had an Americoco(coconut water β€’ expresso β€’ Almond milk)

We loved it! πŸ’•
