This Saturday, Luxembourgish families from across Brazil will gather in São José, near Florianópolis, for the Third Meetup of Luxembourgish Families.

Organized by ACLUX, the Association of Luxembourg Citizens in Brazil, the event will bring together dual citizens, their families, and friends of Luxembourg for a full day of community and cultural exchange.

Brazil is now home to the world’s second-largest population of Luxembourg citizens living abroad, with the greatest concentration in the country’s southern states. LuxCitizenship is proud to serve as one of ACLUX’s primary sponsors and to support an organization that has achieved so much for the wider Luxembourg dual-citizen community!

Luxembourg has released its quarterly statistics on citizens abroad, and there are some interesting insights!
As of last night, there was one more Luxembourg citizen living in Germany (22,739) than in the United States — so the number in the US should surpass Germany sometime this week or next. We also now know that even with a fully packed Bierger-Center ahead of the Article 89 deadline in December 2025, that final month's numbers didn't substantially boost new citizenship acquisitions compared to a typical quarter. Keep in mind, citizenship applications at the Bierger-Center take 4 months to process and data is released quarterly, which is why we mention December. Since Brazil made up the largest share of December's Bierger-Center applicants, this can be read as a general decrease in other types of citizenship applications in the months that followed. Will that hold as a long-term trend?

On December 31, 2025, Luxembourg’s most famous ancestry-based dual citizenship program ended. There was a clear last-minute rush, with the Bierger-Center fully booked in November and December. Because processing takes about four months, the January–March 2026 citizens abroad data already reflects all but the last 30 days before the deadline. Early signs suggest Brazilians made up a large share of these final applications, with relatively few Americans.

December 31, 2025 came and went, and with it, the final chance to apply for Luxembourg citizenship through Article 89 of the country’s nationality law. No more applications. No more extensions. 926 new American dual citizens. 1,061 new Brazilian dual citizens. The first post-deadline data is in.

Luxembourg just released its latest numbers on citizens abroad, and even with Article 89's citizenship recovery program officially closed, the final wave of applicants is still working through the system.

The U.S. now has 21,880 Luxembourg citizens—the third-highest quarterly growth ever. For the first time ever, the Luxembourg diaspora has surpassed over 55,000 citizens living in the Americas.
