Campus Fire Safety: Ask the Right Questions!
Heading off to college or supporting a student this year? Safety starts with asking the right questions to gauge a school's level of preparedness.
Key Questions to Ask School Officials:
Fire History & Prevention: How many fire incidents occur on campus, and are they accidental or intentional? Do officials follow up with public education on prevention?
Safety Features: Which buildings have automatic fire sprinklers? Does every student room have a smoke alarm? Are there enough outlets with enough power to feed energy needs safely?
Training & Drills: How often do residence hall staff and students receive fire and life safety training, evacuation drills, or fire extinguisher training?
Policies & Prohibited Items: What is the disciplinary policy for false alarms or failing to evacuate? Are smoking, candles, or halogen lamps prohibited, and what small appliances are acceptable?
