Zero roads. Počitelj, Bosnia is a whole town built on stairs - Ottoman fortress, 16th-century mosque, medieval fort on top, all stacked up a cliff over the Neretva.

It’s been standing since at least 1444. Twice, everyone was gone: the Ottomans took it in 1471, and in 1993 it was shelled and emptied in weeks.

The stairs survived. So did whoever keeps climbing them.

Delos was the birthplace of Apollo and the holiest island in Greece. In 426 BCE, Athens made it illegal to be born or die here - and dug up every grave, shipping the bodies to Rheneia. Guidebooks call it purification. Thucydides tells you what it was: Athens controlled the Delian League, and this sanctuary was its sacred heart. Holiness wasn’t discovered here. It was legislated.

Delos was the birthplace of Apollo and the holiest island in the Greek world. It was also home to one of the largest slave markets in the Mediterranean. Rome made it a free port in 167 BCE, and the sanctuary’s harbor filled with human cargo - Strabo claims ten thousand sold in a single day, though that number is rhetoric, not a ledger.

They saved the Habsburg Empire from the Ottomans. Vienna beheaded them for it.

Čakovec, Croatia - my hometown, and the castle of the Zrinski family. A century holding the line against the Ottomans. Then Vienna signed away their victory, called their next move treason, and executed Petar Zrinski in 1671. The name was supposed to disappear. It didn’t.

Theodoric ruled Italy for 33 years through Roman law, Roman titles, Roman power. But when he died, he refused to disappear into Rome.

His tomb in Ravenna is the only surviving Ostrogothic royal mausoleum; one monolithic stone roof, no internal supports, completely foreign to Roman architecture.

A barbarian king who mastered Rome. Then chose to be buried outside it.
