James 3:5: “So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things”.

Although the tongue is small, it can speak and boast of great things. Boasting is associated with pride. Those who boast of doing great things are sinning and often putting others down with those boasts. So, we see in this first section of James 3, the need to control our speech. When our speech is controlled, the rest of our lives are in God’s control. When our words are out of control, then our words are destructive.

Our words can be either righteous or unrighteous, holy or sinful. Much of this chapter deals with the need to avoid sinful speech. The Bible has much to say about what types of speech to avoid. The view that words don’t really matter is not true.

A tongue that is tamed and under God’s control will speak pure words, gentle words, reasonable words, merciful words, sincere words, words that don’t show partiality. The fruit of godly speech will be good. Ungodly words of any kind produce conflict between people and promote evil. We must grow in speaking wisely.

In today’s world, ungodly speech is everywhere and growing worse every year. Ungodly words are demonic and fuel hatred and division between people. These negative words reveal the sin that is in the hearts of people who use them. Sometimes, we excuse using ungodly words by saying, oh, that just slipped out, I didn’t mean to say it. Well, if we use that kind of excuse, we’ve just lied as well. Ungodly words come from sin in our hearts that needs to be owned and repented of.

To speak with godly wisdom requires courage as you will be in the minority. As believers, God calls us to be leaders for Him. Leaders do not give in to peer pressure, they say the right things, even though everyone around them is saying the wrong things. Quite frankly, unwise speech is part of many believer’s vocabulary. First of all, we need to look at our own hearts and learn to tame our own tongues. Then we can speak the truth in love to help others speak wisely as well.

A tamed tongue not only does not speak the wrong things, it always speaks the right things. We can’t learn to control our speech by sheer will-power. Much of our speech patterns are habitual. We need Holy Spirit’s help to develop new, godly speech habits. Part of learning to change in the use of words is to realize the destructive power of words. God wants us to use our words to speak His wisdom into every situation.

Do you want to know what godly speech looks like? The Bible is filled with God’s Word, which by definition is godly speech. Look at how Jesus addressed situations and people and seek to follow His example. Make a decision to be a leader in your speech, not afraid to be different. As we do, God will help us be peacemakers and influence a lost world for Him.

Colossians 3:1: “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God”.

As believers, we have been raised with Christ into a new life, an eternal life. As believers, we are to seek the things which are above, which is where Jesus is. Another translation of this verse says “set your hearts on things above.” The things above are the things that are eternal, that will last forever. To seek the things that are above is the opposite of seeking the things that are below in our world. So, in this New Year, we are to set our goals in life in keeping with the things above. The things below, the things in this world are to be used by us to reach our eternal goals. To seek the things above, to set our hearts on things above, we must discipline our thought life.

We are to continually look to and focus on Jesus. He endured the suffering of the cross for the joy that was set before Him (Hebrews 12:2). What was the joy set before Jesus? I believe the joy was the knowledge that His suffering and death would result in many children to be born into the family of God. Jesus suffered and died because He looked forward to the joy of forgiving you and welcoming you into God’s eternal family. Jesus looked forward to an eternity with each person that is saved through His death. And now, Jesus is seated at the right hand of God in heaven. He rejoices over every person who has put their faith in Him.

As giving us the gift of salvation gives Jesus great joy, so receiving the gift of salvation should give us great joy. Let’s not take the gift of salvation for granted. It cost Jesus everything to give us this gift. Salvation is the biggest and best gift that you’ll ever receive. Salvation is not just a one-time gift, it is a gift that will last forever. In eternity, we’ll be worshiping Jesus for the gift of salvation. A gift that was freely given out of love, despite the enormous suffering that it entailed. I believe that when we truly comprehend the greatness of Jesus’ gift to us, it will fill our lives with great joy. Nothing else in life matters as much as your salvation.

Many other blessings that we have in life could be taken away from us. But no circumstance or person can take our salvation away as we continue to follow Jesus. As we find our joy in our salvation, we will find it in every other area of life.

Jesus, the exalted King was rejected by His people when He came the first time. As we follow Him, we also will encounter rejection by those who choose not to believe. Jesus suffered and died for each one of us. We must remember that it was our sins that nailed Jesus to the cross.

Yet the good news is that Jesus’ suffering provides salvation to everyone who believes in Jesus. Forgiveness and salvation is the greatest gift that we could ever receive. Jesus went through His suffering for the joy of having us in the family of God. The more we comprehend the awesomeness of our salvation, the more the joy of the Lord will fill our lives.

Luke 1:35: And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.

……………….”Merry Christmas”!.......…………..

For the first and only time in history, a virgin would conceive without a man involved and bear a son. The angel explained how this miraculous virgin birth would occur. The Holy Spirit, God Himself, would come upon Mary and enable her to conceive. What that means is that the child would be fully human from Mary and full divine from the Holy Spirit. The angel said that the child, Jesus, would be holy and sinless. He would be the Son of God, God in human flesh. That is what Christmas is really all about, the birth of God in human flesh as a baby.

Not only would Jesus’ birth be miraculous, but Jesus would be the Savior, who would save people from their sins. Many people are confused about Jesus’ plan for their lives. Some people think that God is hiding his plan from them, so they can’t find it. The truth is that God wants you to know His plan for your life. He won’t tell you the complete plan all at once. But He will tell you enough to help you take the next step in His plan. God is not hiding His plan for your life. Other people confuse their own plans for their lives and think it’s God’s plan. Substituting your plans for God’s plans will never work out. God’s plans are always in agreement with God’s Word. While the specifics of the plan may not be detailed in the Bible, the basic principles of the plan will be. God’s plans for your life and not about you, they’re about building God’s kingdom.

If the plans you think are God’s are all about your fame, fortune or benefit, they’re not from God. God’s plans for your life are about His kingdom, His glory and His fame. As we head into the new year, be sure to submit your plans for this new year to God and allow Him to adjust and correct your plans. It’s really all about …Choose to welcome Jesus as your King. when Jesus comes to your life your life will be changed. This christmas time open your hearts for Jesus and welcome him in your hearts and homes…..
