Parking may not be the splashiest part of a downtown retail strategy, but in New Haven, Connecticut, it became a practical lever to serve both residents and retail.

When the city had the chance to separate an underused garage from a distressed multifamily complex, it converted the garage to public use, invested in deferred maintenance and created a shared parking resource for Ninth Square retailers, restaurants, residents and commuters.

Redeveloped mall sites, shopping center deals and store growth plans are all in motion.

Four shuttered malls and one partially redeveloped mall site are moving toward mixed-use futures designed to better serve their communities, including two arena-anchored districts in Dallas. URW also plans to buy out its partner in Westfield UTC, an open-air mall in San Diego’s La Jolla neighborhood, for about $705M.

Greenberg Gibbons has launched a fund targeting $300M for additional essential service shopping center acquisitions along the East Coast.

Plus, Black Rock Coffee is plotting 810 more stores, Meta is planning 50 Meta Lab @ Best Buy stores-within-a-store, and Ulta Beauty is planning an experiential flagship in Times Square.
