Boaz is wealthy, powerful, and male; Ruth is a poor, widowed, non-Israelite woman alone in a space with a man she barely knows. Unfortunately, we can easily imagine an alternative universe in which a less ethical person would have seen this encounter as ripe for exploitation. And yet, Boaz does not take advantage of the situation.

In an era where toxic masculinity is too explicitly dismissed or implicitly encouraged, and where the Hebrew Bible does not always provide the best models of how to treat women, we need ancient and modern role models that just because a person has the ability to exercise coercive power does not mean that they must or should use it.

Join me for a shiur on Boaz and Ruth's midnight encounter and the lessons we might draw from it.

Thank you, , for your invitation to represent and at your annual reception for at the Museum of the City of New York.

Such a beautiful ceremony; you are a true friend of the Jewish people.

It was especially moving to see you award z''l, my former student from who was killed on 10/7, an honorary degree from the State University at Binghamton, where Omer was planning to attend after he completed his service in the . His memory lives on.

I'm excited that this will be my third year representing on the faculty at 's overnight Tikkun Leil Shavuot celebration on May 21-22!

Here is my session info:

When You Cannot Save Every Life:

Pikuakh Nefesh, saving a life, is one of the highest values in Judaism. But how do you know if a life is in danger? Should people put their own lives in danger to save others? And when saving everyone is not possible, how do you choose? This class will explore the boundaries and limitations of pikuakh nefesh using rabbinic texts and modern case studies.

Visit mmjccm.org/tikkun for more info.

What a pleasure it was to give future at the opportunity to learn with Dr. Abraham Warshaw, 's Chief Medical Officer, about and the role of brain death testing in that process.

Such amazing questions!

I'm fortunate to call all of these students future colleagues. Thank you so much to Professor Burt Visotzky for your invitation to teach.

TOMORROW NIGHT, come together as the Community learns together in our second course with 's , "Money and Power."

In this course, we’ll explore the effects of influence and how Jewish sources might advise us on how to respond when navigating relationships with power imbalances. We’ll explore questions like:

-When do we speak up and when do we stay silent?
-When do we speak truth to power, and when do we flatter to avoid conflict?
-What moral standards should we require from those in power, and what happens when they fail to meet those standards?

Politics is poisoning the fight against antisemitism.

I have strong political views, and perhaps you do, as well. I’m not changing my beliefs anytime soon—and I don’t expect you to change your worldview either. So if you’re still reading, here’s what I do want to challenge:

The way we talk about antisemitism has become so entangled with politics that it’s making us immeasurably worse at actually fighting it.

We argue about whether “the left” or “the right” is worse.

We collect examples that prove our side is correct.

And in the process, we lose sight of the thing we claim to care about.

I’m not immune to that trap.

And so it’s time for some tough love:

I can fight anti-Semitism, or I can win a political argument.

But I can’t do both.

And neither can you…
