I recently saw a viral story of a mother dolphin jumping a 15-foot railing to escape an aquarium has been widely circulated on social media, especially on Facebook and TikTok. The story states that the dolphin was captured, separated from its calf, and later escaped to find its child.

However, there is no credible evidence from news outlets or marine mammal experts confirming this event took place. The narrative appears to be a fictional anecdote being shared to provoke an emotional reaction.

Last year, a photographer captured footage of a juvenile great white in Australia’s Lake Conjola. While the shark was awe-inspiring enough for the drone pilot Trent Micallef, it was something he realized while reviewing the footage days later that was most disturbing. Footage clearly shows something white trailing the shark as it moves through the water. He’d assumed in the moment that white tail was a remora fish. But Lake Conjola is a very popular tourist destination for fishermen, and Micallef eventually realized the white flag-looking thing trailing the shark was actually a fishing lure.

“It’s a shame the effect we can have on them. I would love to have encounters like this more often but if things like this keep happening, we won’t get to have them anymore,” he said.

The list continues!

A Christmas tree worm (Spirobranchus giganteus) is a type of marine polychaete worm found in tropical coral reefs worldwide. It gets its name from its brightly colored, spiral-shaped gill plumes, which resemble a Christmas tree. These gills are used for respiration and filter-feeding, as the worm captures plankton and other microscopic food particles from the water.

Christmas tree worms burrow into coral and create a protective tube, where they spend most of their lives. When threatened, they can quickly retract into their burrows, sealing themselves inside with a trapdoor-like structure called an operculum.

They come in a variety of colors, including red, orange, blue, yellow, and white, making them a visually striking part of coral reef ecosystems. While they do not harm corals directly, their burrowing can influence reef structures over time.
