Visited three client production sites over the past week. In addition to higher raw materials costs for packaging, the level of dependence on skilled pack out labor is presenting unique challenges in this market. Anteris Consulting Group is focused on redesigning packaging to use less material, pack out faster, and in some cases, utilize automation to minimize labor dependence. The improvement opportunities are tremendous!

As incredible as it sounds, we’re hearing the industry is pushing for another linerboard increase on top of the March and April increases.

Just wrapped up a successful Pack Expo trip. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, the Anteris team had 13 meetings with suppliers, clients, potential clients, and friends in the industry. The level of innovation and breadth of opportunities continue to amaze me.

I was just out in the growing fields / processing centers this spring. Labor conditions are worse now. This is some of the most fertile ground in the world, and growers just can't find enough labor to harvest everything.

No one wants to do the harvesting.

Two major happenings in the packaging world this week…

1) WestRock bought Kapstone. Notwithstanding the obvious financial, operational, and distribution synergies, WestRock is loading up to enhance its competitive position in CA, OR, and WA. Anteris Consulting Group is excited about the market opportunities in these locations. The West Coast supply and pricing dynamics will be altered significantly!

2) The rumor of IP pushing through a massive, immediate ($50/Ton) container board price increase was confirmed this week. Here’s the big takeaway…this increase is NOT tied to a corresponding move in the traditional paper price indices. The decoupling of container board prices from the traditional indices would cause a tectonic shift in pricing power from buyer to supplier, and could have a far-reaching impact on the market dynamics. Read the price change mechanism clauses in your contracts carefully!!
