Aurora Lampworks Inc.

Aurora Lampworks Inc. Aurora Lampworks is a lighting restoration, replication and custom fabrication studio in Brooklyn, NY. Over the years, the company has grown.

Aurora has restored, rewired, retrofitted, and UL listed lighting fixtures for individuals, designers and institutions for over 35 years. Aurora Lampworks has been in business serving the architectural, design, and restoration communities for 25 years. The company was started by its founder Dawn Ladd in New Haven, CT, and moved to New York City in 1990. It began as a showroom where antique lightin

g fixtures were restored and offered for sale. Today, we are a team of designers, artisans, craftspeople, conservators, glassmakers, and finishers that produce high quality, made to last lighting fixtures. The restoration of historic lighting fixtures is our highest purpose here at Aurora. We understand that we are fortunate in that we are a company entrusted to conserve those objects that will be available for generations to come. Our scope of work is diverse. In addition to restoration services, we are often called upon to replicate an antique lighting fixture or to create a new design either from an existing fixture, from drawings, or photographs. Regardless of the style or period, our clients count on us to create lighting fixtures that will be around for decades. It is our challenge and pride to undertake these tasks and live up to our reputation by doing the best job we possibly can. Making lighting fixtures meant to last is an important part of a conservation ethic we share, the greenest fixture is one that already exits. Aurora is socially responsible by trying to be as ‘green’ in every aspect of our work lives as possible. We make conscious decisions about the packaging we choose, chemicals we need to use, and encourage staff people to reduce, reuse, and then recycle all the necessary materials we use every day. It is a goal of Aurora’s that although we concentrate on the restoration of historic lighting fixtures, an ethic of conservation prevails through all that we do.

Lighting restoration can be challenging for a person afraid of heights! Fortunately our technician is not a bit bothered and has become an expert operator of the ‘jeanie’ lift. It not only extends up 30’ but has a slide out deck to cantilever over to reach up close to where the fixture attaches to the ceiling. in this photo he is checking the wiring in an DMX box which can control the various circuits on the 30’ long wrought iron fixture in the Veterans’s Room Park Avenue Armory.

The mantel sconces in the Veteran’s Room have 53 lights each. Originally gas lights, they are now lit by small low wattage LEDs. The light passes through glass tear drop shaped crystals creating a glow approximating the ambience of gas lighting. Years before LEDs became ubiquitous, Aurora fabricated the fabulous copper chandelier in the Company D room . It was designed by architects and lighting designers . The design intent was to recreate the essence of the room’s original gas chandelier from the 1800s while offering versatility with its seven different light sources. In keeping up with technology, all the lights will be converted to LED. Above is our technician removing one of each type of bulb. Through a mockup process, replacement LED bulbs will be evaluated for lumen output, color rendering and dimmability. The goal is to recreate the versatility and ambience of the room while saving electrical and maintenance costs. The chandelier with its new solutions will surely light hundreds of events to come.

The Veteran’s Room Park Avenue Armory is pretty amazing from any vantage point. But today high up in the 30 foot ceiling on a lift we got a ‘bird’s eye view’. Having fabricated and/or restored all the lighting fixtures in the room 10 years ago, it was time to replace the fixtures lighting the room’s ornate freeze. Those and other task lights were mounted on the (2) 30’ chandeliers designed by Tiffany & Co. n 1890. Originally gas, they were electrified in the 1930s and then retrofitted by Aurora to LEDs under the direction of lighting.
