This year, we partnered with SeriousFun Children’s Network, the world’s leading network of camps for children with serious illnesses, to evaluate the pilot of a brand-new training curriculum. This program is designed to help youth-serving organizations everywhere create safe, inclusive spaces for kids with complex medical needs.

Why does this matter?

Because SeriousFun’s model changes lives. Their camps aren’t just fun; they’re meticulously designed for both physical and emotional safety, building confidence, belonging, and joy for children and families who often face exclusion elsewhere. Now, through this curriculum, they’re sharing that expertise far beyond their own camp gates.

Our role is to walk alongside the SeriousFun team as they refine the training in real time. We’ll look at how engaging it is, how useful participants find it, and how well it prepares them to put new ideas into action. We’ll also help build a simple, sustainable way for their team to track progress long after the pilot ends.

It’s evaluation as a tool for growth, and that’s exactly how change sticks.

We have some exciting news to share: in addition to MERL and training services, ELC is officially a publishing company 🎉 And, 2025 will see the publication of not one but THREE books, each with their own very special story 🎉 🎉 🎉

Each book we release is a continuation of our broader mission: to build a more equitable world through storytelling, evidence, and impact.

The first publication, in final edits, is an unofficial cookbook for the movie Sinners. It is as much a careful documentation of Black American history and culture as it is a celebration. In the words of its author, nutritional anthropologist Wheeler del Torro, “This is not just a cookbook. It is archival resistance. It is a refusal to let our rituals, memories, and traditions be wiped away. You can shut down exhibits, rewrite textbooks, or manipulate timelines. But you can’t erase what’s been preserved in our kitchens, hands, music, and memory.”

Quite the first publication if we do say so ourselves 🔥
