Many "experts" who talk about leadership really don't know what the hell they're talking about.

They've read books, taken classes, studied successful leaders, but they haven't done the hardest part - putting the real work in.

I recently had the opportunity to tell some stories from my years of putting the work in as a leader on US Navy nuclear submarines.

It was a great evening of storytelling and charcuterie, where I shared how the principles we thrive on in the nuclear navy are critical (pun intended) to being a successful leader in the business world.

TBT to the time Jay Sachetti and I gave a workshop on Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition to a room full of veteran entrepreneurs at the Institute for Institute for Veterans and Military Families - IVMF Veteran EDGE Conference this past March.

For the past 8 months, Jay and I have been co-leading a mastermind group mentoring veterans looking to buy small businesses. We had our first acquisition in the group a couple of months ago, and man, he is CRUSHING it!

I've been really lucky to have mentors throughout my life and career who have challenged me, supported me, and called bu****it on me when I needed to hear it, but at the end of the day, believed in me.

Getting to pay that forward and help build a community of veterans helping veterans has been super rewarding. To top things off, Jay and I were honored to receive a mentorship excellence award from IVMF at the conference.
