TAX SEASON IS HERE!
The IRS will begin accepting 2025 tax returns on January 26, 2026, so it’s time to get your documents ready and beat the rush.

What’s NEW this year?
There are some exciting changes that could mean bigger refunds and more savings. I’ll be breaking each one down in upcoming posts.
Here are 5 key updates you need to know:

1. Higher Child Tax Credit amounts helping families keep more of what they earn.
2. No federal tax on tips for qualifying workers; a big win for service industry earners.
3. New deduction for overtime pay allowing folks to keep more of their hard-earned overtime income.
4. Increased standard deductions & inflation-adjusted brackets, meaning lower taxable income for many.
5. New retirement and savings incentives (like Trump Accounts for kids under 18) provide more ways to plan for the future.

Stay tuned. I’ll dive deeper into each credit and deduction soon so you can make the most of your refund.

GOOD NEWS—New York’s first-ever Inflation Refund is happening!

🗽 WHO GETS IT?
✔ Single Filers earning up to $150K → $300 refund
✔ Joint Filers earning up to $300K → $500 refund
(Basically, if you live here and haven’t fled to Florida, you probably qualify.)

💰 WHERE’S THE MONEY COMING FROM?
Excess sales tax revenue due to rapid inflation—aka the extra $$$ we’ve all been dropping on $8 bagels and $20 sandwiches. So, yeah, you earned this.

📅 WHEN CAN WE EXPECT IT?
If the state legislature doesn’t drag its feet, checks should start going out Fall 2025.

⚠️ WAIT—WHAT IF I DIDN’T FILE TAXES IN 2023?
If you didn’t file a 2023 tax return, you might not be eligible! 😬 The details aren’t final, but based on past programs, the refund will likely be tied to your tax return. If you weren’t required to file (like certain retirees or those with very low income), you might still qualify, but nothing’s confirmed yet. So file your 2023 taxes ASAP to be on the safe side.

👉🏾 WHAT’S NEXT?
We wait. Stay tuned for final approval on Gov Hochul’s proposal.

What will you do with your inflation refund?

If you’ve been feeling anxious all day and can’t put your finger on the source it’s most likely due to today’s date. April 15th is usually the day when millions of people scramble to get their income tax return or at least their extension filed. Rest easy because due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government extended this year’s federal income tax filing deadline to May 17, 2021. This extension is automatic and applies to filing and payments. So if you owe taxes for 2020, you have until May 17, 2021, to pay them without interest or penalties. This does not apply to extensions. These must be submitted by midnight tonight. State deadlines vary so check with your state’s tax agency for more details.

The IRS announced that the nation's tax season will start on Friday, February 12, 2021, when the tax agency will begin accepting and processing 2020 tax year returns.
The February 12 start date for individual tax return filers allows the IRS time to do additional programming and testing of their systems following the December 27 tax law changes that provided a second round of Economic Impact Payments and other benefits.
This programming work is critical to ensuring IRS systems run smoothly. If filing season were opened without the correct programming in place, then there could be a delay in issuing your refunds. These changes ensure that eligible people will receive any remaining stimulus money as a Recovery Rebate Credit when they file their 2020 tax return.

Do I Need Receipts?

Receipts are not only important when spilling tea. Receipts are even more important since they support many of the entries in your business’ financial records and tax returns.

Bank statements and cancelled checks are sometimes not detailed enough and a combination of supporting documents may be needed to substantiate all elements of a purchase.

Let’s say you bought a new printer from Costco for your tattoo parlor. While there you also bought $600 worth of groceries and a new lawn mower. Now unless you’re a catering-landscaping-tattoo artist the only thing you’ll be writing off for your business is the purchase of the printer.
Your bank statement only shows the total purchase amount for your visit that day while your receipts will help you, your bookkeeper, your tax preparer and (God forbid) auditors better differentiate deductible expenses from the non-deductible ones.

SO KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS!!!!!

And another thing!!! Don’t show up to your tax preparer’s with a shoe box like the one in this post. Unless you’re willing to pay the price for the time it will take them to thoroughly examine them all.

Instead use an app like Receipts by to scan and track your business expenses.

Your preparer will love you for it.

Comment with questions, statements or just to show love and support.

Peace and Blessings.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, enacted last spring, includes several temporary tax changes helping charities, including the special $300 deduction designed especially for people who choose to take the standard deduction, rather than itemizing their deductions.

Under this new change, individual taxpayers can claim an "above-the-line" deduction of up to $300 for cash donations made to charity during 2020. The deduction lowers both adjusted gross income and taxable income translating into tax savings for those who take advantage.

In addition, the CARES Act includes other temporary provisions designed to help charities. Individuals who itemize their deductions may deduct qualified contributions of up to 100 percent of their adjusted gross income. Also a corporation may deduct qualified contributions of up to 25 percent of its taxable income. Contributions that exceed that amount can carry over to the next tax year.

Comment for more info.
