Your Appearance: Dating and the Outer Game

Beautiful bags and gorgeous footwear are status symbols among women. If you have the money for a $49,000 Birkin or a $2,000 LV bag or Christian Louboutin sandals costing $7,000, go for it. But if you can’t afford it, it won’t matter to most men. Use that hard-earned money on what matters, like a personal trainer, appointments for blowouts, waxing, self-tanning, cosmetics, manicures, pedicures, and beauty procedures.
I’ve never overheard a man say, “Wow, love her Birkin gag, is she single?”

Hip, But Not Too Hip

You should be hip and stylish, but make sure you’re not wearing anything too costumey or clownish. While couture items are beautiful, they aren’t the type of items that necessarily attract men.

What might be exciting and fashionable to a woman - like a colorful, high-end Gucci dress with fancy fabric galore, won’t necessarily turn a guy on.

WHEN IT COMES TO CLOTHES…..

Know your strengths and weaknesses. You can hide many of your problem spots if you know how to dress right. Even if you’re overweight or have a body part that isn’t in the best shape, there’s a way to dress around problem spots. For example, while you’re working on getting rid of a flabby tummy through diet and exercise, wear certain tops - like peplum in black or another solid dark color - that hide it or wear Spanx….

There will be certain items that won’t look good on you because you don't have the right body shape or it won’t work with your coloring. As gorgeous as something is in a catalog or on a mannequin, if it doesn't flatter you, don’t buy it. Or if you have an item in your closet that doesn’t work, donate it to someone who will get use out of it. Doing so is great karma. Plus you will make room for a better outfit - one with s*x appeal - to come into your closet.

Remember, there are many things you can do to improve your look so that you’ll be more alluring, feminine, and s*xy to a man. I gathered these tips while working professionally with men in my capacity as a matchmaker, while coaching women all over the world as a dating coach, and through personal observations….
While trends will change, these tips are timeless and always in style.

Some women dress for other women - friends or frenemies. They want to prove they have great fashion sense. Some women dressed for their moms growing up. They carried that over to adulthood and never learned how to dress s*xy.

Be careful who you listen to in this department. You’ll get a lot of advice on your appearance. From your artsy hairdresser to your well-meaning, strait-laced mother, and younger, cooler fashionista daughter. Many people will have an opinion on what looks good on you. You may not want to listen to any of that advice. Instead do what works for men. That is, if you’re single and want to be in a relationship with an attractive masculine guy. (Or if you’re married and want to continue to keep that fire going).

Looking good will attract a man, and keeping a spark alive with a boyfriend or husband will make him happy, and you’ll be happier and more confident, too.

Understanding that men have types saves women time because they hold out for the guy who likes their type. They don’t waste time with men who are lukewarm about them.

This also helps you become more confident because you realize it’s nothing personal. It’s just the way it is. You can shrug your shoulders and say, “I’m a short blonde, she’s a tall brunette, so he must like tall brunettes. I'm gorgeous but just not his type. There’s nothing I can do about it except wait for the guy who likes short blondes.”

Be the best version of you and there will be someone you like who will be gaga over you, and that will be the beginning of a beautiful courtship. When you wait for the man who wants your type, you end up with a man who is so into you, so attracted, and feels so great around you that he will pursue you.

Men and Women in a Nutshell

At cocktail parties, people love to ask about my career as a dating coach. The single ones bring up online dating and pepper me with questions. I often explain how different men and women are online: “Initially, men mainly care about photos. And women have a long list of criteria.”

A man’s wish list is mainly related to a woman’s looks. A man knows right way if he likes a woman based on her photos. He’s hesitant to go on a date if he doesn’t see a full body shot. Men tell me they don’t like it when a woman looks angry in her online photos. They also tell me they get annoyed if they go on a date and find out a woman's online dating photos were from the 1990s.

Women certainly care about appearance, but to a lesser extent than men. Women also care about the type of career a man has. They get annoyed if he has terrible grammar. They think he's a cliche if he has photos with a big fish. They think he's a pl***oy if he posts snaps with other women. They think he's missing a sensitivity chip if he has pictures posted of his children. The list goes on and on.

Men and women approach dating and relationships differently.

Try to never compare yourself with others, even models or Instagram babes. Realize supermodel Cindy Crawford doesn’t look like Cindy Crawford all the time.
Don’t get down on any perceived defects. Work with the body you have now, even if you aren’t happy with it. Most women are hard on themselves and worry about every minor or major flaw. The angst over that imperfection could be better spent on something more productive, like 10 minutes of walking up and down the stairwell in your apartment building or you could find a YouTube video on how to create a smokey eye look.
Instead of letting your physical imperfections get you down, work with what you have while also working on being the best you can be on the outside.

Celebs and Models Get Rejected, Too

If you’re a model, great.

But if you aren’t, it doesn’t matter. Not all men want supermodels. Some do. But others like the girl next door. Some want blondes, others brunettes or redheads.

Some will want you. Others will want your best friend. While others will want your co-worker or boss. Some men aren’t going to like you, no matter what. You could look like Iman, Irina Shayk or Gigi Hadid and there will be a man who will reject you and want a different type.

Models and actresses and other high profile beauties have heartache, heartbreak, and headaches like everyone else. Princess Diana of England got Prince Charles, but he was in love with Camilla Parker Bowles, who was 14 years older than Diana. The tabloids and others considered Camilla frumpier than Diana. Yet I believe Charles, now King Charles, has that spark with Camilla that he didn’t have with Diana.

Many women think they can turn a lackluster man around if they love him harder. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. You may scratch your head, wondering why a guy is crazy in love with a certain woman.

There are lots of traits that turn a man on. But it all starts with his physical type. Then you need to do the best with what you have, never letting yourself go….Many women try to win men over by working hard at it, like they work hard in school or business. They end up in tortured, unrequited relationships because of this.

Once you understand the importance of type, you’ll become a dream girl to a great guy because you’ll hold out for the one who likes your type. You won’t pursue men because you’ll realize it’s a waste of time.

Men do marry women they're not attracted to s*xually. Men and women marry for a variety of reasons, and s*xual chemistry and physical attraction aren’t necessarily present or part of every relationship or marriage. But if true romantic love is what you’re holding out for, wait for a man who is interested in your type.

The best way to know if a man likes your look is to wait for him to approach you and ask you out….
