The Penn House — one of a series of residences I’ve designed over the past few years.

Many of these projects are narrative-based, built around nine key elements that act as protagonists in a story about how we live, how we gather, and how we build mythology around who we are.

The hearth is one of these elements. In the Penn House, it sits as the engine of the home — providing warmth, anchoring the plan in solidity, and over time, capturing memory. It’s the fixed point everything else moves around.

From the approach, the house gives away almost nothing: a twelve-foot brick wall standing in the meadow like an artifact found rather than built, a single door, a hidden courtyard beyond. On the living side, the home opens completely — a long linear bar riding a concrete plinth that floats above the landscape, glass dissolving the edge between interior and forest.

Concealment at the approach. Release within. A house that asks you to arrive slowly.
