Compliance is the first C, and the one most organizations believe they have already handled.

What that usually means in practice: we filed the 990, we passed the audit, we have a policy binder somewhere.
What it means in our framework:

The filing is a byproduct, not the goal. If the 990 is the first time the year's numbers get properly assembled, the year was run wrong.

A policy nobody can locate is not a control. A conflict of interest policy signed once in 2019 is a document, not a practice.

Compliance is what you can demonstrate, not what you intended. An auditor does not grade effort.
That is the first C. Culture and Consistency are what stop it from decaying quietly between audits.

Ask a nonprofit ED how compliant their organization is right now and watch what happens.

They do not say yes or no. They say "let me check with our bookkeeper," then HR, then whoever handles grants.
That is the actual problem. Not that something is broken, but that nobody can see the whole picture in one place.

We built a free compliance assessment for exactly that. 39 items across 6 areas, about 5 minutes, and you get a grade with a prioritized list of your gaps. Two details to start, and the results are yours.

Culture is the C people assume has nothing to do with compliance
It has everything to do with it.

Culture is whether your bookkeeper flags a coding error the week she notices it or the week before the audit. Whether a program director asks about allowability before spending instead of after. Whether "I was not sure, so I asked" is normal here or career limiting.

You can buy a system. You can hire for compliance. You cannot install a culture where people surface problems while they are still small.
That is the second C, and it is the one that decides whether the other two hold under pressure.

There are two Single Audit thresholds in effect right now. Most nonprofits only know about one.

The trigger moved from $750,000 to $1 million in federal awards expended. That headline made every newsletter last year.

Here is the part that did not: the $1 million threshold applies based on when your fiscal year begins, and awards issued before October 1, 2024 can still carry the old $750,000 rules with them. An organization holding multi year grants that straddle that date is managing two rulebooks at once.

Which means a nonprofit that expends $900,000 in federal funds can look comfortably under the new line and still owe a Single Audit.

The fix is not complicated. It is a schedule that tags every award by issue date, maintained all year, not reconstructed in month ten.
Not sure which threshold applies to which of your awards?

Nonprofit EDs are losing 15 to 25 hours a week to work that could be delegated for $20 to $30 an hour.
Bookkeeping. HR admin. Grant reporting. Board prep.

That's not passion. That's a system problem.

The hours don't disappear because the work is hard. They disappear because nobody has ever sat down and asked which of these tasks actually requires the executive director.

Our Nonprofit Burnout Prevention Playbook breaks down what to keep, what to delegate, what to automate, and what to eliminate entirely, plus a 90-day plan to buy back 10+ hours a week without adding full-time headcount.

"Consistency" gets misread as "we do the same thing every year."

Real consistency means the process runs the same whether your bookkeeper is out sick or your ED is traveling.
Systems don't take PTO. People do.

That's the second C in our framework — and the one most nonprofits skip building.

A nonprofit client came to us mid audit-prep with zero documentation trail. 90 days later: clean records, no scramble, no all-nighters before the site visit. That's the difference between reacting to compliance and building for it. Audit risk isn't fixed with a checklist the week before. It's fixed with systems the year before.

Most nonprofits don’t fail audits because they’re doing something wrong. They fail because they can’t prove they’re doing something right.

We built a free Compliance Checklist to help you close that gap—before your next audit or funder review.

The audit finding that costs the most isn't the fine.
It's the funder who quietly stops calling.

On September 16, 2026, PRIMUS founder Janneh Wright is leading a free session for Nonprofit New York on the 3C Framework — how nonprofits build compliance that doesn't fall apart the week before an audit.

Free to attend. Free checklist to take home.

Zero documentation. Twelve months later: audit-ready.

That’s not a slogan—it’s the real transformation we build toward with every nonprofit client we take on.
Compliance isn’t a scramble before an audit. It’s a system you build once and maintain.
