Osaka Wears Hana Yagi "Kill Bill" Kimono!

Naomi Osaka’s outfit—titled "Evolving Ceremony"—beautifully combined centuries-old Japanese tradition with modern athletic craftsmanship, triggering an overwhelmingly enthusiastic reaction from fans and commentators alike.

The Design Details

Designer Hana Yagi and Osaka conceptualized the look to tell a personal story of transformation and heritage through nine detachable components:

The Fabrics: The floor-length kimono gown was crafted entirely from seven upcycled, vintage textiles. It combined material from a traditional shiromuku (Japanese bridal kimono), vintage silk kimonos, and a deconstructed Western wedding dress.

The Custom Embroidery: The outerwear featured intricate, subtle embroidery of cranes and cherry blossoms. These serve as traditional symbols of good fortune, renewal, and longevity.

The Silhouette: The look featured a traditional furisode style with billowing sleeves and a classic obi (sash) reinterpreted with textured ties shaped into dramatic bows. A flowing tulle skirt trailed behind her as she walked.

The Nike Performance Dress: Underneath the robe, her actual match kit featured 3D floral appliqués and a micro-pleated, curving hemline. This design was inspired by kirigami, the Japanese art of paper cutting.

The Accessories: Osaka completed the ceremonial look with pearls from the legendary Japanese jeweler Mikimoto and a traditional kanzashi hair ornament.

The Crowd and Locker Room Response

Because Osaka played on Court 3—which lacks a secluded tunnel—she had to walk right through the public grounds.

The Fans: Spectators erupted in admiration as she arrived. Dozens of fans stood with their phones raised to record her entrance, and one female fan loudly shouted, “C'mon queen!” as she glided past. BBC commentator Alicia Molik noted that fans had been "waiting all day" to see what Osaka would wear.

Grassroots Tennis Killed USA Champions!

In my opinion, the biggest factor that happened to hurt American tennis was the push towards grassroots tennis and taking tennis out of the clubs. How many champions have been developed in Europe who grew up playing in the public parks? Additionally, the push to move all or most small USTA pro circuit events to public facilities to play on hardcourt after Connors and McEnroe lost the Davis Cup to Sweden, contributed tremendously to young American professionals to be incapable to play on other surfaces besides fast hardcourt, IMPO.

With so much tennis being played outside of country clubs where tennis etiquette and the where the sport is for the elite--which means that there are much higher standards and much more positive peer pressure,--tremendously hurt the quality of those who play, as well as the industry. Tennis professionals are paid less, relatively, because any clown with a basket can run up to a public court and claim to be a tennis professional.

There are videos out there where severely overweight and very young so-called tennis professionals mouth off about how great they are, how great their system is, and that if you just buy a book or a chart for X amount of dollars, you'll have all the answers to develop a junior champion! Back in the day, you'd be too embarrassed to even do that!
