We love dogs, but in our business people come first. Including people who legitimately need the help of a well-trained service dog. But with the somewhat unclear regulations and the increasing trend of bringing dogs everywhere, how can you tell if the dog is truly providing a life supporting service to the patron who wants to bring them in?
Businesses can ask two questions under the Americans with Disabilities Act:
Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?
What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?
An emotional support animal is not a trained service animal and a business has no obligation to allow a patron to enter their establishment with one. Some establishments might be OK with it, but it's best for everyone if you ask ahead of time.
