Tyler recently completed the restoration of this Kachina doll. The doll came into the studio with a missing ear and a chipped left hand. Tyler fabricated a new ear from our collection of fragmented ivory, and filled the chip on the left hand before inpainting it.

Here is a painting by the artist Remo Farruggio (1904-1981), before and after treatment. After a surface cleaning we focused on designing a new frame. We decided to replace the old frame with a more minimal option because the artwork is modern, geometric, and light in style. The previous frame was heavily ornamented and distracting. We designed a floater frame with a white gold leaf finish to complement the painting.

Reframing can give a work of art a new lease on life.

Last week we traveled to Providence, Rhode Island to attend the PLRB Claims Conference. At Center Art Studio we work closely with adjusters on fine art insurance claims large and small. During the conference our team made valuable connections, and took part in insightful conversations with fellow attendees. At our booth we offered claims professionals the opportunity to witness live painting and paper restoration on pieces from our study collection. Our Director Lansing also hosted a panel with Nelia Moore the Vice President of PURE Art Services East, and Stephen Earthman the Senior Account Manager at Crozier Fine Arts. The panel presented an adjuster’s guide to fine art claims.

Thanks to PLRB and to all of the attendees for such a wonderful insurance industry event!

Here’s Kerry discussing a treatment plan for this Japanese screen with Eva and Malery. Together they will address structural repairs and retouching to the image bearing paper. Stay tuned for a behind the scenes video on their process!

Paper can become increasingly acidic as it ages and is exposed to the elements. This aquatint came to us stained and on acidic paper which was brown and deteriorating with some tears along the edges. We treated the print with a water bath, reinforced the tears, and flattened it under weight before framing it with archival materials.

Thank you for the positive feedback on our recent post in which we treat a Century-Old Historic Playbill from the Lambs Foundation collection. Here is an image of the finished product. We mended the surface using delicate rice paper and wheat paste, then preformed limited color retouching to areas of loss. We concluded the treatment process by framing the Playbill with archival materials. We look forward to sharing more behind the scenes footage from our studio!

Tyler and Caryn recently traveled to Southampton to remove a protective cover from a large outdoor sculpture. We designed the cover to custom fit Archeology of Desire, a painted metal sculpture by Marc Quinn.
The surface of the sculpture degrades if left exposed to dramatic changes in climate. The protective cover is made up of two layers. The inner layer is a soft conservation textile that protects the painted surface of the sculpture. The outer layer is a water repellent awning fabric that we secured to the ground for added stability.
We will return in the fall to re-install the protective seasonal wrapping. Sometimes conservation is a cyclical process!

We just finished treating a group of excellent paintings for the Lambs Foundation. This before and after image shows the dramatic transformation achieved by hours of painstaking cleaning, repair and inpainting. The painting is Howard Chandler Christy’s Voice of Experience, featuring his favorite model Elise Ford. We are honored by the trust the Lambs, America’s oldest professional theatrical organization, places in us.

Thanks to our client for trusting us with his portrait of his great- great- grandmother, Henriette Friz. Tyler has removed the canvas from the stretcher and is cleaning the surface to remove dirt and discolored varnish. After completing this step Tyler will begin structural repairs to the canvas to patch and reinforce the areas of loss.

Previously we restored and returned a portrait of Henriette’s husband, Johann Friz. We look forward to reuniting the pair after completing our treatment.
