B"H This is the second post/blog that I am writing about the over 50ish crowd of whom chronic unemployment and/or underemployment has reached epidemic proportions in the US. So, practically speaking, what can one do with oneself with this given reality. I think that the best way to proceed with this is to itemize my suggested strategies:
(a) Do not beat yourself up over being outdated, outsourced, skills suddenly not usable, etc. After all, you are a human being, not a machine, and technical progress in the workplace has often exceeded the retraining level of the most seasoned professional
(b) Take a good hard look at yourself. Can you identify other skills or interests within yourself, while they may not be as well paying, could offer you either a degree of independence to work for yourself or perhaps like a subcontractor, or there is greater local demand in the area you live in?
(c) While volunteering for good causes is certainly commendable, it will not put bread on the table. This is a time that you have to get over your shame, be brutally practical, and if you have to apply for social services and entitlements to get by, that is what they are there for. If you need to use local food banks and other such resources, the by all means, do so.
(d) Retraining might seem like a commendable option but I advise caution with this one. Employers are still less likely to hire the older worker in comparison to a younger one, and unfortunately, vocational schools out there are not pushing the trade they are supposed to retrain you for but rather the salaries of the instructors and owner/operators of the schools. Often the fields of training are almost impossible to get into without prior experience (A classic case is medical coding). Do your homework carefully when considering retraining
(e) If you have the financial means to move to an area that has more job opportunity for you, then go for it.
One of the surest ways to suffer from clinical depression is to be stuck in a geographic locale with no opportunity.
(f) The most critical element in this situation is to maintain your faith and trust in HaShem. Try to force yourself to be joyful even in the face of adversity. You still need to have a clear mind to give a proper Divine service daily. It is through this last element that somehow
ways are found by everyone to somehow cope with
various situations. Keep the faith
