B"H This is the second post/blog that I am writing about the over 50ish crowd of whom chronic unemployment and/or underemployment has reached epidemic proportions in the US. So, practically speaking, what can one do with oneself with this given reality. I think that the best way to proceed with this is to itemize my suggested strategies:
(a) Do not beat yourself up over being outdated, outsourced, skills suddenly not usable, etc. After all, you are a human being, not a machine, and technical progress in the workplace has often exceeded the retraining level of the most seasoned professional
(b) Take a good hard look at yourself. Can you identify other skills or interests within yourself, while they may not be as well paying, could offer you either a degree of independence to work for yourself or perhaps like a subcontractor, or there is greater local demand in the area you live in?
(c) While volunteering for good causes is certainly commendable, it will not put bread on the table. This is a time that you have to get over your shame, be brutally practical, and if you have to apply for social services and entitlements to get by, that is what they are there for. If you need to use local food banks and other such resources, the by all means, do so.
(d) Retraining might seem like a commendable option but I advise caution with this one. Employers are still less likely to hire the older worker in comparison to a younger one, and unfortunately, vocational schools out there are not pushing the trade they are supposed to retrain you for but rather the salaries of the instructors and owner/operators of the schools. Often the fields of training are almost impossible to get into without prior experience (A classic case is medical coding). Do your homework carefully when considering retraining
(e) If you have the financial means to move to an area that has more job opportunity for you, then go for it.
One of the surest ways to suffer from clinical depression is to be stuck in a geographic locale with no opportunity.
(f) The most critical element in this situation is to maintain your faith and trust in HaShem. Try to force yourself to be joyful even in the face of adversity. You still need to have a clear mind to give a proper Divine service daily. It is through this last element that somehow
ways are found by everyone to somehow cope with
various situations. Keep the faith

B"H I have decided to embark on a weekly blog through my TRRT page but would like suggestions as to issues out there that may be of pressing concern. My first message are for the over 50ish people out there who have had chronic issues of unemployment, underemployment, and general day to day coping with making ends meet. While the press does not report the
economic improvements that are happening under the Trump administration and improvement in the business climate overall, unfortunately the total waste of an entire over-50 generation and loss of productivity is a national tragedy not being addressed on any level politically. This tragedy was greatly exacerbated under the anti-business climate of the Obama administration and has festered for a long time. Age discrimination amongst employers is
very widespread but almost impossible to prove when
competing for one position with more youthful competitors.
So what is the proper perspective for the over 50ish crowd? First and foremost, especially to spouses and significant others, please don't blame your partner/spouse for economic circumstances beyond their control!! As
long as your partner/spouse is not and abuser, philanderer, nor addict, please be supportive instead and
preserve the sanctity and integrity of your family!! I am
first speaking about attitude because as is a central tenet of Chassidus Chabad, what comes out of the mouth as speech ultimately has a cosmic effect translated to the role of action.
In my next post,we will look at more practical aspects of how to cope practically for the over 50ish crowdf

B"H
In the quest to maintain the dignity of those relatives who are no longer as physically and mentally capable to care for themselves, please remember that our elders still carry the words of wisdom and experience that the younger generation can still learn from. Even in those challenging times which may seem burdensome and unbearable for the adult offspring to handle, please try to remember the general Biblical dictum to honor your parents, and in extension, to elder family relatives. They still deserve to be treated decently and humanely.
