Public Speaking Courses For Losing the Fear

It’s Not All In Your Head

The Energy of Attention

Your Public Speaking course should start by making you aware of the three forces that are at work: the energy of attention, the sense of judgment, and the fear of consequences. If you are having a one on one conversation with someone, and they're listening to you, you definitely feel the energy of their attention. When the roles reverse, they will feel your energy of attention. The Sense of Judgment

We do want the people who are watching us to use their judgment. We want them to judge that we are in fact, the ones who are driving the bus, that we are taking them somewhere on a journey based on the message that we're delivering. So we want them to use their judgment in a positive way. But when the energy of attention blindsides you, it can send that sense of judgment into a negative spiral.

The Fear of Consequences

The last force that gets triggered is the fear of consequences. I don't mean that people are just going to shut you off, even turn you off, or walk away. It’s more of a sense of, “Here I go again, I've let myself down. I can’t believe this is happening again!”. All of these forces, the energy of attention, the sense of judgment, the fear of consequences will hit you in the first few seconds. Suddenly you’re feeling that vacuum of silence. That’s a lot coming at you all at once.

Somebody Save Me!

Your fight, flight, to freeze response is very strong when you feel under attack. You might start shaking, your voice might crack. You might start to sweat, or even feel like your heart is beating out of your chest.

There is no better way to establish that you are an authority on what you're talking about, then by utilizing gestures. Studies say that over 50% of your message is conveyed through your body language. Now, of course, body language is not just gesturing alone. It's eye contact, facial expressions, posture, and of course, your gesturing. Public Speaking Classes show you, in realtime, how tapping into the impulses that bring you to gestures will actually unblock your flow, inspire good eye contact, good facial expressions, even have a strong impact on the rhythm and pitch of your speech. Gesturing is so vitally important because it grounds you, adds to your authenticity, and projects a sense of commitment to every that you say.

Confidence On Display

We all know when we see someone who is confident and committed to the things that they're saying. We also know when we see someone who appears to not be that comfortable delivering their message. What Do I Do With My Hands?

There are a couple of things that people miss in terms of technique. Some clients admit that they’ve been told that they gesture too much, or that their flailing hands are a distraction. I’m often asked, "Well, where do I start with my hands? And where do I finish?” The simple answer to that is, you begin speaking with a gesture, or with the intention of delivering a gesture, it may not be on the first word. But once you gesture, you don’t stop gesturing. while you are delivering your message.

Of course, when you're listening and watching other speakers in your Public Speaking Class, that's when you get to rest. But when you are speaking, you need to be gesturing. It establishes your authority in a way that your words simply can not by themselves.

Gesturing ETA

One of the interesting things about speech technique is where you decide to deliver those gestures on which words, and that can vary too. There's an amazing amount of flexibility. But you do need to decide what the gesturing ETA is. In other words, intuitively, or spontaneously, you want to
figure out where you want to deliver that gesture. Gesturing in this way makes it seem like you're very much in the moment, like what you are doing is spontaneous. And that adds to your authenticity, which ultimately establishes your authority.

Solid Gesturing Technique

A really important aspect of gesturing technique is to hold one gesture until the impulse for the next gesture comes along. We call that having really good unspoken continuity. The idea is do not, do not bounce your gestures, I know that it feels like I can make even more of an impact if I just keep doing the same gesture. But what that does is it begins to erode your authority It begins to erode your authenticity. And it's simply because of gesturing technique. This has a huge impact. Many people are so influenced by the visual aspect of what you do. You should be utilizing this gesturing technique, even when your listeners cannot see you. If you're on a one-on-one phone call, or a conference call, still gesture, as if those people are in the room, because it has that much of an impact on the sound of your voice, on the sense the projection of the commitment you have to the words you're speaking.

The fastest way to increase your speaking impact is to attend a Public Speaking Class for a safe environment to explore the possibilities. It will feel a little awkward in the beginning, but slowly, you’ll feel yourself getting “into the flow.”
