May is Women’s Healthcare Month, according to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition (N.C.C.C.). The goal of this month-long event is to empower women to prioritize their health, and to educate women on steps they can take to improve their health and prevent complications later in life.

Annual mammography screening after age 40 is extremely important in women’s health, as it detects breast cancer in the early stages and greatly reduces the mortality rate. Petrone Associates works to ensure the safety of the mammographic imaging as well as to maximize diagnostic content of the exam by optimizing the radiation that is delivered. Our therapy division helps optimize treatments for women, and our technical staff ensures the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities involved in women’s health are appropriately accredited.

The American Association of Physicists in Medicine’s annual Spring Clinical Meeting will take place this week from April 1st to April 4th in Orlando Florida. Petrone Associates’ Chief Medical Physicist and CEO Tom Petrone will be a panel member in a session titled “Diagnostic Practice Models: Consulting”. The session will feature members of various medical physics consulting groups. It will focus on the scope of responsibilities of these consulting groups, how they staff to fulfill these responsibilities, and how they have adjusted as the industry has evolved.

Each year the Failla Memorial Lecture is presented by the Greater New York Chapter of the Health Physics Society and the Radiological Medical Physics Society. Dr. Petrone is a past President of RAMPS and remains active in their educational and regulatory affairs. The lecture is held in memory of Gioacchino Failla, an Italian American physicist who, among numerous achievements, created the first research program on the medical applications of radiation.

This year’s Failla Memorial Lecture will honor Pat Zanzonico, PhD. Zanzonico was on the faculty of the Department of Radiology of the New York Hospital- Cornell Medical Center, and is an Attending Physicist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Applied Physics and Mathematics at Columbia University.

Pat also lends his teaching expertise to Petrone Associates to benefit of their Diagnostic Radiology Residents and Medical Physics Residents.

February is Black History Month, and we would like to recognize the important work of the Black and African American Medical Physics Subcommittee (BAASC) of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM). BAASC is a subcommittee of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and its mission includes addressing the needs of Black, African American and African medical physicists as well as increasing representation within the field through recruitment and mentorship during education.

Casa Belvedere, Italian for “house with a beautiful view”, is a community cultural center in Staten Island. Built in 1908, it is included in the US National Register of Historic Places, and housed several families before being turned into a cultural center.

“The majority of Italian immigrants came to this country to pursue a better life for their family, not to be part of organized crime as depicted by the mass media.” Says Gina Biancardi, Founder and President of Casa Belvedere.
