Hi, I’m Dr. Greg Toback—a periodontist, educator, and the founder of Shoreline Periodontics and Resolute Dental Partners. For over 25 years, I’ve been focused on more than just treating gums, I also grow great dentist-led and patient-focused practices, mentor the next generation, and protect what makes dentistry special: doctors leading with purpose, integrity, and a commitment to exceptional care

. This page is where I share insights from the operatory, lessons from the road, thoughts on building meaningful dental practices that last, and so much more. Whether you're a young doc, a seasoned clinician, or somewhere in between—welcome to the conversation.

True leadership is when your ambition expands beyond yourself — when your drive becomes about creating opportunities for others. Mentoring the next generation. Building teams and cultures where people can grow, contribute, and thrive.

Here’s what I’ve learned: success became less about what I built personally and more about what we were building together.

So yes — find your ambition. Grow it. Develop it. Protect it.
But don’t let it stop with you. Make the meaningful pivot and channel your ambition into leadership. Because the legacy won’t be revenue or KPIs… it’ll be the people you build along the way.

Dentists are leaders — and how you lead matters.

Ambition is like adrenaline. It can fuel your drive and success. But ambition by itself is personal — it’s about what I want to build, achieve, and accomplish.

If we want to have the highest impact, ambition has to mature into leadership — because leadership changes the question from “what am I building?” to “who am I building now?”

Final chapter coming next.

Ambition is powerful—but it can become discouraging if we never stop to recognize progress.

Think about climbing a mountain: if you’re always staring at the summit, it feels like you’re barely moving. But if you stop, look back, and realize how far you’ve come… it gives you energy to keep going.

Acknowledge growth. Because ambitious people move the goalpost fast—and learning to pause might be one of the most important disciplines you can develop.

Ambition is powerful — it pulls us forward and gets us excited about what’s next. But if we’re not careful, we end up living only in the future… and we miss what’s right in front of us.

Slow down. Recognize the moment. Appreciate what you’ve been gifted — because ambition should enhance your life, not rob you of today.
Strategy #2 is coming next.

Ambition is a superpower. It can keep you energized, growing, and “young.”
But there’s a darker side too—if ambition isn’t measured, tempered, or tamed, it can start costing you the very things you’re working for.

So the real leadership question becomes:
How do we leverage ambition for progress while staying self-aware enough to contain it?

Next videos: I’ll share two strategies that have helped me personally. Stay tuned.

The goal isn’t to cling to the ambitions you had at 30.
It’s to become the kind of person capable of new ambition at 40, 50, 60, 70 and beyond.

That’s how we stay young — by refusing to let our memories become bigger than our future.

Coming Up Next Week: the traps and hazards of ambition. Stay tuned.

Ambition isn’t gas we put in the tank that eventually runs empty — it’s a capability.

When we treat ambition like it’s fixed, we become passive and wait for motivation. But ambition is something we build using key traits.

Part 2 - Part 3 coming Thursday.
What’s one habit that keeps your ambition “alive”?

Retirement planning used to leave me feeling… empty.

Because the narrative felt like: accumulate while you’re young, then someday you stop and finally enjoy life. That never inspired me. I still wanted to build, impact, create, and become — not just “cash out.”

Then I heard this quote from Dan Sullivan...

Part 1 of a new series on ambition. Part 2 coming soon.
What are you still building into?

👉If you want freedom later, you need leadership now.
