The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress has one of the most unusual engine start systems ever used on a military aircraft.
During Cold War scramble drills, the United States Air Force used a process called a cartridge start to rapidly launch fully loaded B-52 bombers.
Instead of relying only on conventional engine startup systems, controlled explosive cartridges were inserted into selected engines to spin them up almost instantly.
This allowed massive B-52 bombers to reduce startup times from over an hour to just minutes during emergency response exercises such as Minimum Interval Takeoff (MITO) operations.
Fast launches. Massive bombers. Explosive engineering.
