The College of Staten Island’s Innovation Hub celebrated the successful completion of its inaugural Verizon-sponsored Emerging Tech Impact Cohort on Thursday, June 11, as Staten Island high school students presented innovative technology-driven solutions to real-world community challenges.

Over seven weeks, students explored artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, design thinking, and emerging technologies before applying those skills to develop technology-driven solutions to real-world challenges. The program culminated in a Tech Showcase where students pitched their solutions, demonstrating the skills they developed throughout the seven-week program.

“At , we’re committed to digital inclusion, which is why we proudly sponsored the Emerging Tech Impact Cohort to expand equitable tech access to high-demand fields like AI, VR/AR, coding, and cybersecurity. Seeing these students collaborate in teams to design innovative solutions for real community challenges demonstrate exactly how technology can drive meaningful social and economic impact right here on Staten Island,” said Ashley Greenspan of Verizon’s State and Local Government Affairs team.

Alumni spotlight — utobo

This founder came through the CSI Tech Incubator building a platform for creators selling digital products and courses. When AI tools made that category nearly free overnight, the team didn't patch things up, they rebuilt.

Their new product, tobo, is an AI employee that runs an online store's day-to-day: marketing, pricing, sales, support, operations. The founder sets direction; tobo does the work.

Proud to see an alum adapt like this.

Technology becomes more powerful when it transforms how people learn.

This week, the CSI Innovation Hub welcomed business students for the second time from Chuo University in Tokyo, Japan for an immersive entrepreneurship experience provided by The Glimpse Group that blended artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and real-world business strategy.

Working in teams, students developed startup concepts and pitched them to an AI-powered virtual investor that challenged their ideas, asked follow-up questions, scored their presentations, and provided personalized feedback on how to strengthen their businesses.

This time, the visit was more than a technology demonstration – it was experiential learning. By combining emerging technology with communication, critical thinking, and entrepreneurship, we're creating learning experiences that prepare students for today's workforce and tomorrow's opportunities.

The future of education isn't just teaching with technology. It's learning by doing.

Innovation thrives when global perspectives meet emerging technology.

The CSI Innovation Hub recently welcomed students from Brazil's Paraná Talents Around the World Mobility Program, a highly competitive international initiative designed to expose top STEM students to world-class research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

The experience extended beyond traditional classroom learning. Students participated in an immersive AI and VR-powered entrepreneurial challenge, explored emerging technologies, and discussed how technical expertise can evolve into innovative ventures that address real-world challenges.

As Christian Perticone, Director of the English Language Institute, explained:

"The important thing is that they are imagining new possibilities."

That mindset reflects the mission of the CSI Innovation Hub: preparing students, entrepreneurs, and communities for the future of work by connecting education with innovation, emerging technology, and industry.

Programs like Paraná Talents demonstrate how international partnerships create opportunities for knowledge exchange, workforce development, and cross-cultural collaboration while strengthening New York's innovation ecosystem.

We thank our faculty, staff, and international partners for making this experience possible and look forward to continuing to build meaningful global partnerships.

The CSI Innovation Hub was proud to table alongside Glimpse Group during the Undergraduate Research Conference Visit Day, where 75 Staten Island high school students attended the annual event highlighting the depth and diversity of student achievement, with participants presenting original research, creative works, and performances spanning a wide range of academic disciplines. At the CIH x Glimpse Group table, they explored how emerging technologies like AR/VR are shaping the future of education and workforce development across growing industries.

Students had the opportunity to engage with immersive technology experiences, learn about real-world applications of tech beyond the classroom, and discover how innovation is transforming industries from healthcare to engineering and beyond.

A great day connecting future innovators to the possibilities of tech at the College of Staten Island.
