Continuing our revisitation of David Donovan Jensen’s Hymn series, these works offer a moment of contemplation while also evoking a sense of serenity. The inspiration of this series comes from David’s music selection, notably that of a Russian children’s choir radiating from his phonograph. The dulcet tones led David to the “singing out to one idea,” the exploration of the hymn; what does it mean and how can it be manifested into an art work. This question is further explored in the Hymn series, consisting of works on paper and large scale paintings.

Currently on view at The Gallery at 200Lex on the 10th floor of the New York Design Center.

Currently on view at the The Gallery at 200LEX at the New York Design Center are two works on paper by Minneapolis artist David Donovan Jensen. As part of his Hymn Series, David created several pieces that evoke the sensations of natural elements. ‘Fire Hymn, No. 1’ and ‘Fire Hymn, No. 2’ focus on the liveliness and movement of fire.

Even though David uses cool tones rather than warmer reds and oranges, he still manages to articulate similar sensations of fire through his use of layering to create unique textures and a sense of tactility. Whether viewed together or alone, David’s ‘Hymn Series’ offers a much needed reprieve and moment of nature that can be greatly desired in today’s climate.

Bicycle Fine Art artist Neal Perbix is continually experimenting and innovating with his works. These techniques are especially evident in ‘Untitled’, 2019. The overall aesthetic reveals a more painterly style for Neal and offers new possibilities for future works. When asked about his process, Neal shares, “I'm expanding on my mediums. Definitely going for more of an ‘all in’ approach.” With his background in industrial design and furniture-making, Neal’s technical prowess with a variety of materials leaves audiences excited for whatever he creates next.w

Continuing to create work based on his formal training as a furniture designer, Bicycle Fine Art artist, Neal Perbix is beginning to “push the canvas in different directions.” For this particular painting, Neal says that some of the painting techniques utilized “stemmed a little out of frustration,” a sentiment that is relatable to all during these challenging times. But from these moments of uncertainty, Neal introduces viewers to an ever-evolving process, with color and texture being excavated from the multiple layers.

Working both on paper and canvas, David Donovan Jensen’s ‘Hymn Series’ offers a contemplative reprieve from the day to day and allows one to escape into the ocean waves. Through the use of acrylic and pastel on paper, David is able to develop a tactility while also evoking a softness, two opposing sensations that work in harmony in this work, ‘Ocean Hymn, No. 4.’ This work as well as ‘Ocean Hymn, No. 5’ are currently on view at the New York Design Center on the 10th floor at The Gallery at 200LEX.

Continuing to revisit a few of our favorite works currently on view at the New York Design Center, Neal Perbix’s, ‘Untitled’ walnut veneer drawing, here showcased in a satin black maplewood frame is a dynamic piece, featuring the artist’s signature use of industrial materials. Neal’s work introduces a sense of movement that creates a conversation between art and design.

Also in our current spotlight are two works on paper from David Donovan Jensen’s ‘Hymn series.’ Known for his large paintings created by unconventional means, the artist uses a sander to record the patterns of his work space. which his paintings in turn serve as a recording of the physical space. Textures developed from the floor in which he works on are easily read through the undulating and rhythmic patterns.

Displayed in a grouping, or independently, these original works would be a wonderful addition to the design conversation. To inquire about pricing or to view these in works in person, make an appointment at The Gallery at 200LEX at the New York Design Center or email [email protected]

Revisiting David Donovan Jensen’s Ocean Hymn Series, Bicycle Fine Art is pleased to feature this work on paper, titled ‘Ocean Hymn, No. 5’ now on view at The Gallery at 200LEX at the New York Design Center. Taking a breath from today’s reality, the soothing cool tones lets the mind venture to the ocean, imagining a warm and sunny day. These oceanic hues create a calming effect, which contrasted with the yellow coloration and the subtle layers of texture, draws the eye as a focal point, creating a conversation between art and design in any space the work is displayed.

Working on paper with a limited palette and new materials, Christopher Saunders developed this series as a way for him to reexamine his process and explore new ideas. While working from home has presented its own challenges, Bicycle Fine Art is excited to showcase the Recurring Fields series and cannot wait to see what Christopher creates once back in the studio.

When reminiscing about individual pieces in his Recurring Fields series, Christopher Saunders states that “each holds a physical memory and can on occasion take me back to the decisions made in developing each one, the wins and losses so to speak.” Christopher’s methodical and oftentimes spontaneous approach serves as not only a record of his thought process, but also a moment in time that he can look back upon.

One of Brooklyn fine artist Christopher Saunders’ influences for the Recurring Fields series is music, especially experimental compositions that emphasize tonal shifts rather than melodies. One can sense the varying notes in each of his works, evinced through the different demarcations of shapes from ink and tape.

Like many other fine artists with limited studio access these days, Christopher Saunders has found ways to keep making work, adapting to a new mode of creation and developing his ideas utilizing tools that allow for exploration and experimentation. Whether he’s in his Greenpoint studio or his own personal quarters in New York City, Christopher is still innovating and pushing creative boundaries.
