How Does the Fed's Rate Hike Affect Your Small Business Loan?
Short answer: if your loan has a variable rate, your costs just went up. If it is fixed, your payment stays put, but new borrowing costs more.
The Federal Reserve raised rates by a quarter point on September 16, to 3.75% to 4%. That matters most for lines of credit, business credit cards, and variable-rate SBA 7(a) loans, which follow the prime rate (now 7%). A rough rule: about $250 more per year for every $100,000 you carry.
The bigger point is that more increases may be coming.
What can you do today?
1. Make a list of every business loan and card.
2. Mark which are variable, and see what another half point would do to your monthly cash flow.
3. If it looks tight, ask your lender about fixing the rate.
