🍁🍂 FALL IS HERE! LET'S KEEP THE IRONBOUND CLEAN & BEAUTIFUL! 🍂🍁

As the leaves begin to fall and our neighborhood fills with the beautiful colors of autumn, it's time to do our part to keep the Ironbound clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone! 🧡

The City of Newark and East Ward Councilman Michael J. Silva have announced the 2026–2027 Leaf Recycling Collection Program, helping residents properly dispose of leaves and yard waste throughout the fall and winter seasons.

📅 COLLECTION DATES: October 14, 2026 – January 29, 2027

🚛 Yard waste will be collected in all wards, Monday through Friday.

🍁 IMPORTANT COLLECTION GUIDELINES:

✅ Place leaves at the curb the night before collection, between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM.

✅ Use biodegradable paper bags ONLY. Plastic bags are not permitted.

✅ Grass clippings and other yard trimmings may be included in leaf bags.

✅ Large branches must be separated and tied into bundles.

🚫 Do not rake or blow leaves into the street.

🌱 Whenever possible, compost your leaves at home to help reduce waste!

Get your furry friends dressed in their cutest, funniest, or spookiest Halloween costumes and join us for a morning filled with community spirit, adorable pets, and Halloween fun!

📍 Independence Park – Sheriff Armando and Mary Fontoura Community Center, Newark

🐕 10:00 AM – Pet Parade begins! Enjoy a walk around the outside of Independence Park, escorted by the Newark Police.

🇵🇹 100 YEARS OF SPORT MARÍTIMO MURTOENSE — A CENTURY OF COMMUNITY, FAMILY & THE AMERICAN DREAM

This year marks an extraordinary milestone for an organization that holds a very special place in the history of Newark’s Portuguese community. Sport Marítimo Murtoense is celebrating its 100th anniversary, and on Saturday, November 21, members, families, friends, and generations of the community will come together for a Grand Centennial Gala celebrating a remarkable century of history.

And what a year of recognition it has already been.

Earlier this year, in June, Sport Marítimo Murtoense received a very special honor when the City of Newark ceremonially dedicated “Sport Marítimo Murtoense Way” along a section of Clover Street, at the corner of Van Buren Street in the Ironbound—a lasting tribute to the club’s history, its members, and the generations of Portuguese immigrants and families whose lives have been connected to this beloved institution.

For the Ironbound Business Improvement District, this anniversary is especially meaningful because the story of Sport Marítimo Murtoense is deeply connected to people who have helped shape our organization and our neighborhood.

Our IBID President, Manny Lopes, is an active member of Sport Marítimo Murtoense and proudly served as its President from 1979 through 1982. Today, that connection continues into another generation, with his son Mark Lopes also a current member.

Jack Guerra, a founding member of the IBID, has also been a member of Sport Marítimo Murtoense for many years.

And our current East Ward Councilman Michael Silva, a supporter and municipal member of the IBID, has roots that make this celebration particularly personal. He is from Murtosa, and his father was a member of the club.

These connections tell a much larger story.

For generations of Portuguese immigrants and their families, Sport Marítimo Murtoense was much more than a club. It became part of their lives.

The life of Marítimo intersects with the lives of countless families in Newark.

It was there that many found their first job.

It was there that some met the person who would become their husband or wife.

It was there that friendships were formed, traditions were preserved, Portuguese culture was passed from one generation to the next, and newly arrived immigrants found a community that felt like home.

🇵🇹🇺🇸 And for so many, it was there that they began building their American Dream. 🇵🇹🇺🇸

That is why reaching 100 years is about so much more than the longevity of an organization. It is about the thousands of lives touched along the way—the families, friendships, marriages, businesses, careers, traditions, memories, and generations that grew from this community.

On Saturday, November 21 at 6:00 PM, Sport Marítimo Murtoense will celebrate this incredible milestone with its 100th Anniversary Grand Gala at Avenue A Club in Newark, featuring dinner, dancing, and entertainment by the Bruno Silva Band.

As Sport Marítimo Murtoense celebrates a century, the IBID proudly congratulates its members—past and present—and remembers all those whose dedication kept this institution alive for generations.

100 years of history.
100 years of Portuguese heritage.
100 years of friendships, families, memories, and dreams.

May the next generation continue carrying forward the legacy that began a century ago.
