This Giving Tuesday, Let’s Show Up for Our Sisters

At Meet Her At The Gate (MHATG), we believe every woman deserves to be met with love, dignity, and support as she takes her first steps back into the community. Through care packages, resources, and goal-oriented support, we stand at the prison gates, ready to embrace justice-impacted women with the compassion and encouragement they deserve.

But this work is more than reentry—it’s sisterhood. It’s about walking alongside our sisters as they navigate one of the hardest transitions of their lives. It’s about showing them they are not alone and that their community believes in their worth, their potential, and their ability to thrive.

With your help, MHATG provides six months of sustained, goal-oriented care, giving our sisters the tools they need to rebuild their lives. Together, we can ensure they feel empowered, seen, and supported—not just on day one, but every day after.

🌟 Then and Now 🌟

In 2022, I stood at the threshold of a dream with my first micro-grant for “Meet Her At The Gate.” It was a humble start fueled by passion and a deep desire to make a difference. Fast forward to today, and I’m beyond grateful to announce that Severe Solutions LLC has been honored with funding through NJLEAD by the New Jersey Department of Corrections. This new chapter allows us to expand our support for sisters prepping to reclaim their places in their communities. 🙌🏾

Every step of this journey has been a testament to God’s grace and timing. From the days of small beginnings to moments like these, it’s clear that every challenge faced was setting the stage for greater victories. And yes, I was wearing my lucky dress when we got the news—some things are just meant to be! 😄✨

Here’s to turning pain into purpose and pasts into stepping stones for the future. We are just getting started!

To invest in our sisters is an investment in unconditional sisterhood

Meet Her At The Gate (MHATG) is a pilot female reentry initiative (serving New Jersey’s Essex, Passaic, Hudson and Union Counties) that was founded by a black, female, system-impacted social worker. This unprecedented program embraces a wraparound support model using case management, peer to peer mentoring for emotional support and an Alumni Sisterhood both during and after incarceration.

Staff first provides pre-entry services (in prison) to support goal setting and preparation mindset followed by meeting sisters literally at the prison Gates on Release Day with love and care packages. Thereafter, clients are supported by their Reentry Coach and Mentor for the next six (6) months to engage in the following program services and referrals: peer to peer support, family reunification support, immediate needs (hygiene, clothing, food), gathering identification documents, education, housing, employment and workforce development items, mental health services, license restoration, overcoming learning curves in technology, skill building for parents, substance abuse support, financial literacy & entrepreneur training, reproductive justice and more.

Following graduation of the program, clients are welcomed into an Alumni Sisterhood, where they can continue to be supported as needed but also support new sisters as they enter into the program.

Welcoming...

Nafeesah Goldsmith who at the age of 21 years old started serving a 15yr prison sentence and also began her college career at Clinton College Bound/ NJ-STEP. She is currently the CEO of RISE (Real Intervention Supports Excellence) which is a mission-based sustainability initiative that supports initiatives that support at-risk communities. Nafeesah is a former Criminal Justice graduate student from Monmouth University with a BA in Sociology, is an alumna of Rutgers and currently pursuing a degree in law. Nafeesah dedicates her time traveling to speak on various topics such as incarceration, reentry, the School to Prison Pipeline, the effects of incarceration on families and communities, and her primary focus is building sustainable, prison-free futures.

Antonne Henshaw is a Rutgers Camden School of Criminal Justice graduate school student, the Director and Founder of Transformative Justice Initiative and co-founder and creator of “Meet Em at the Gate” (which inspired Meet HER At The Gate). He is one of the founding members of N.J.S.T.E.P. (New Jersey Scholarship and Transformative Education in Prisons Program) which began organizing in Trenton State Prison in 1992. Antonne is a Motivational/Public Speaker, Entrepreneur, NuEntry Opportunity Specialist for Camden County and One of the Lead Credible Messengers in New Jersey. Mr. Henshaw has dedicated himself to eradicating mass incarceration and transforming legislation to end the structural violence that threatens the public health of our communities.

Alex Cribbs is a South Orange resident with a background in finance and client management, an MBA in Business Negotiation and Mediation, and has a passion for social justice. She's volunteered for several nonprofits and has been an Executive Board Member for the Mental Health of America - Midsouth and Mental Health of America - Greater Dallas.

Beyond grateful for the marinated wisdom at the table. Let's go.

Meet Her At The Gate update
Been keeping my hands to the plow in this building process, y'all. While trying to focus on foundational infrastructure and capacity, I was SO inspired by our Advisory Board Kick Off Meeting!!! This dynamic group is beyond wise and each one of them were chosen for a strategic reason; each one bringing their own unique skill set and experience to make a powerful sounding board. PEOPLE I ADMIRE.

It was the support, for me...to know folks not only believe in your vision but sincerely believe in YOU is all you need to keep pushing. Countdown to WHO is on this Board- THE REVEAL COMING UP NEXT!!!!
