At the height of summer weather, thanks to dry farming, our vines are still lush and vigorous! Does that sounds counter-intuitive? Well, it’s pretty straightforward, in fact. If you irrigate vines on a regular basis, the vine roots get lazy and stay close to the surface of the soil, where they are sure to get the water drip-fed to them.

If you let them get established with some water but then cut it off once they have a decent root system (as we do), the roots will be healthy but continue to search for their own water as the days get warmer and drier. Most roots will dive down into the bedrock to find the water table, which will keep them hydrated even in the hottest of summer days, and they won’t have competition from surface plants and grass for their precious water.

Vines are amazing, aren’t they?

Fun fact Friday: Our yurt and tasting deck are surrounded by Madrone trees that are beautiful and provide shade. This one is shedding its bark.

eHow.com — “The most commonly accepted theory is that it's an evolutionary development which helps the tree shed lichens and parasites such as boring insects, which lay their eggs on the bark. By shedding its bark the tree prevents their buildup and reduces the chance of disease.”

The more you know! ✨ Schedule your next tasting at the Yurt and hang out under the Madrone trees 🌳🍷

94 | (Best Buy) 2019 Ridgecrest Estate Pinot Noir, "Harry Peterson-Nedry and his daughter Wynne have been working with fruit from the southern exposures of this Ribbon Ridge property for more than 35 years. It’s one of the oldest in the AVA and seems to embody the appellation in its warmth and exuberance, starting with its aromatics, all raspberry blossom and bursting cherry, set in a brambly savor. Lean and lithe, it has a streamlined elegance, with tannins that are firm but thrillingly energetic and precise, focused for a filet of arctic char."—P.J.C. (846 cases)$42
